The DAV 311 is quite large (14cm W, 15cm L and 2.5cm H) compared to most portable CD players, but this is to be expected, due to its ability to play mp3s and VCDs as well. I personally quite like its aesthetics, but that's just a matter of taste. Despite its large size it does not seem very durable, although mine still remains intact, the small clear plastic section in the cover is just waiting to be knocked out. The lid could be brocken off with a gentle knock while it is open and is held open by a small spring. The same goes for the battery cover. The buttons also look quite cheap. It is obvious to see where they have cut corners to lower the price.
The remote control is the size of a thick credit card and has similar buttons to those found on the old Sinclair ZX-81 keyboards. However it is adequate and operates everything it should. However the remote also has some extra functions that cannot be accessed using the controls on the device, which means if you lose the remote some functions cannot be accessed, such as scene select and switching between Pal and NTSC formats.
Playback of standard audio CDs is comparable to that of most CD players, but there is no bass boost facility. You will also need to buy new earphones as the ones supplied are not very good. It has all the standard functions of a CD player as well as programming the order of tracks.
Plying mp3 CDs works just like the normal playback of CDs. One major flaw of the player is that it does not remember, which track you were at last when it was switched off so it starts from the beginning. This is acceptable with audio CD's where there are only 20 tracks but with an mp3 CD it is incredibly annoying when you have to skip through hundreds of tracks or use the remote to enter the track you want. Anti-skip is fine for in the car or on the train, but forget about running or jogging with this CD player.
Finally we get to the VCD playing function - the reason why I bought this product. Connecting the player to a TV is just like connecting a video camera and I had no problems with this. When playing VCDs the sound and picture quality is perfect, but the video jumps back a few fractions of a second about every 30 seconds. The video can also break up occasionally into blocks, which requires you to pause or stop the video and press play again. These problems seem more apparent with action movies than others. It plays Pal and NTSC video formats.
If you want a portable media player to take on holiday then this is fine, but if you expect it to play music and video as well as seperate device you will be disappointed. I think NAPA have tried to build a device to carry out more functions than it is capable of doing. What do you expect for £80?
Advantages: VCD/CD/MP3 Playback And iR Remote Disadvantages: Bad headphones, Over heating Adapter
I am amazed that no-one has done a review on this thing! Its more or less like the DAV-310, but from my point of view, this newer player can read far more mp3 cd's than the 310.
Style wise, its blue not orange, may seem like a small change on paper, buts its a drastic change from the highlighted orange of the 310.
It comes with credit card sized IR remote, good for the VCD, but when its in your pocket listening to mp3 songs, an in line remote is ... ...comes with NI-MH batteries as well as a DC adapter. I must admit the adapter gets very hot, and I've noticed the adapter information sticker bubble, and thats on the first day. Cable wise, a phono video, phono audio and headphones are supplied. If you do buy this, get rid of the headphones! They are crap, the player can achieve far better with better headphones.
VCD playback was almost faultless. On some cd's there was some jerkyness, but overall ...

Advantages: Cheap, plays VCD Disadvantages: Poor quality construction, uses up batteries very quickly
Before I bought this player I visited the manufacturers website, I liked the specifications and it's peformance values so I decided to go for it, I bought this player from a shop at £37.99,
For a player that boasts 3-5 hours playing time on one set of rechargeable batteries, has in-built charger, supports VCD, comes with a remote control and gives an on screen display of the MP3's on the disc this would apear to be great value for money.
The manual ... ...can be hard to follow at times.
Ther player comes with all the cables that you require to connect it to the TV, and a credit card sized remote control, as well as headphones, although sound quality improves dramatically if you use better brand headphones
It takes up to 5-8 seconds for the player to queue up and play each track.
According to the manufacturer the following is the battery operating times:
3-5 hours (MP3/128kbps or VCD / Alkaline ...

Advantages: Low Price Disadvantages: Anti Shock is Pants
I purchased this product last week. Great it can play MP3s. It palys VCD.
Yes it does but here is some further info.
This unit fails to play any MONO MP3s. I have a lot of audio books in mp3 format and they are all recorded in mono. This defeats the object of why I purchased this unit. I was told by the salesperson that it would
play mono MP3s.
The Fastforward or Rewind does not work whilst playing a CD or MP3. Or Maybe I fail to understand the ... ...I have tried several VCDs in the unit, some work others don't. I did not have the time to analyze all the differences. I made a VCD which was a v2.0 (using Nero 5.5.2.4) which contains about 50 piccies. This plays on the SCAN2000 and various other things but NO JOY on the DAV311. The VCDs that work are reasonable quality. Anti Shock Protection is pants. Just move the thing slightly and it skips all over the place, both in CD and MP3 and yes I did ...

Advantages: Good value for money (at the time), feature-packed Disadvantages: Some quite big problems
Two years ago, the Napa DAV310 was one of the first MP3/CDplayers on the market. Its RRP was about £120, and I bought mine for £85 - which is not too bad, even by today's standards.
The DAV310 is a combined CD-audio, MP3 and Video CDplayer, runs off an internal rechargeable Li-Ion battery, and comes with an infrared remote control - unusual for a portable player. Its white and orange casing is garish to say the least - an optimist would call it an anti-theft feature. Its buttons are well laid out and adequately sized. Build quality is reasonable - the lid is a bit flimsy, but when shut, the unit feels solid. The remote control is a credit-card sized unit with flattish buttons, not unlike the remote controls you get with modern camcorders. You get a pretty basic manual in the box, but it covers everything and it's not bad, to ...
Advantages: Plays vcd's and mp3's (though just!) Disadvantages: No anti shock on cd's, useless battery, mp3 search poor
I bought this product for £100 a couple of months ago but ended up selling it as it is flawed.
The premise is excellent, a portable remote control CD player that also plays vcd's and mp3 discs, which means in the compressed mp3 format you can get 13 hours of music on 1 CD.
As soon as it was delivered I set it all up and connected it to my TV which wasn't too tricky as the manual was fairly good, and all the leads a mains adapter and headphones were included. I tried a normal audio CD for a start and so far so good the sound quality was not going to set the world on fire but it was okay. I then tried a VCD and that was okay too except for the remote control only worked every now and then.
My problems started when I tried my mp3 discs. As there are about 140 tracks on 1 disc trying to find a particular track is a nightmare unless you ...
Advantages: Cheap Disadvantages: Doesnt Read Tracks, Jumps Songs, Hard to Select Song, Slow, Sluggish
I bought this at a computer fair because of its wide range of features. I took it home and was really escited about watching a Video CD on, but when i plugged it in and played the VCD the quality was the worst i had ever seen.
I put a CD full of MP3 in it, the CD had about 200 tracks on but the device only found 52, 30 it jumped. It was hard to select the track i wanted. I put a normal Music CD in and was pleased to see that every track came up, but when i was listening to the music it would freeze, the product has very very poor anti shock.
The sound quality is absolute rubbish when playing everything.
It cost about £40 and is packed with features, most of which dont work. The instruction it came with were vague to say the least and the remote control is hard to use. It feels flimsy and is the worst electronical device i have ...
