...deal with the exploits of a monk called Brother Cadfael. A crime-solving monk? It's certainly an interesting catch. All the books in the Cadfael series are murder mysteries, which Cadfael, who had seen the world before he became a monk, sets out to solve. They have all the important elements of a good murder mystery: an innocent who seems to be the obvious suspect, an intreguing plot, and a killer who you didn't see coming but who makes perfect sense ... ...plot and a well laid-out mystery, these books contain an amusing look at the intregues of monastic life. Far from being pure souls, the brothers are highly relastic, including some who scheme for power and others who are condescendingly devout and love to catch others slacking. ...Shrewsbury needs the relics of a saint to atttract pilgrims and their money (you have to remember that in medieval times every religious institution worth it's salt had relics and that people would travel for miles, and pay for lodging, to visit these holy objects). Robert decides that Winifred, a little known Welsh saint who was martyred and miraculously restored to life, will suit his purpose and sets off into Wales to bring her bones back to the ... ..."second" life as prioress of a convent, don't want to give up their saint to the Abbey. Lord Rhisiart, a local landowner, is very vocal in his objection to the plan and for his pains ends up with an arrow sticking out of his chest. Suspicion is thrown onto Engelard, a young Englishman living in Wales who happens to be Rhisiart's daughter Sioned's choice of husband (but not her fathers!).
