**THE PLOT**
Set in Liverpool in 1933, the novel tells the story of publicans Eve and Eddie Dobson, and their three daughters, Sarah, Maggie and Lily. The family live above the pub and struggle to make ends meet in the depression that rocked the UK at that time.
Eddie Dobson has a gambling habit and an eye for the lazy barmaid he and his wife employ. His daughters are almost grown up but Eddie feels stifled by his wife and family. The eldest daughter, Sarah is a waitress in a hotel, a reliable if dull girl. Maggie, the second daughter is engaged to Billy and works in a greengrocers' shop, she is rather snobbish and has hopes for improving her lot once safely married. The youngest, Lily is a trial to her family, she is spoiled, selfish and self-centred. Lily wants to be famous, she wants to go on the stage or travel or be rich. She has a job as a seamstress which she is good at, but she hates it and never gives up grumbling and complaining about her life.
Circumstances change and rock the family in many ways. Eve finds herself solely responsible for the family and the pub. She has problems aplenty and comes to rely heavily on her two older girls. Lily adds to the family dramas with tragic results. Strengths that Eve did not know that she had come to the fore and with the help of her daughters and barman Harry Dempsey, Eve comes through...... More I will not divulge here for fear of spoiling the book for readers!

**CONCLUSION **
An enjoyable, well- written novel, with strong, well drawn characters-perfect for whiling away a wintery afternoon! The plot is a little predictable in places, but not so much so that reading pleasure is spoiled, as it twists and turns, throwing up surprises, sadness and wry humour here and there. My only criticism is that I thought the ending a trifle weak, I would have liked to know more of the family's fortunes.
Advantages: An excellent read. Disadvantages: Cannot think of any.
...Eve and Eddie Dobson run a pub in Liverpool. They have three daughters. Times are hard for many people, Eve and Eddie included, because of the Depression and Eddie is told by the Brewery to economise so that the pub will survive. Eve takes matters into her own hands first and sacks their flirty barmaid Doreen, only for Eddie to follow Doreen. Eddie genuinely thinks that Doreen is interested in him, but she is just interested in a good time and needs ... ...the eldest, is workiung as a waitress but feels stuck in a rut. Maggie, her middle child, is marrying her boyfriend, Billy, and they plan to take over the greengrocers that Maggie works in. Lily, the youngest chiuld, is the most unsettled. She thinks that her mum should run after her dad and make him come back. She'd like to work in the theatre as she wants to be famous. I found the book a really easy one to read, with the stereotypical woman as ...

Manufacturer's product description
Eve and Eddie Dobson have been running the George pub in Liverpool for over twenty years. Now the Depression is taking hold and with money in short supply it's galling for Eve that the barmaid they can barely afford spends the day making eyes at Eddie rather than pulling her weight behind the bar. At least her three daughters have never been a worry to Eve. Lily's dreams of going on the stage haven't led her into trouble so far. Sarah seems content to slog away as a waitress while Maggie's gently directing her devoted boyfriend to the altar. But when Eddie's flirtation with the hired help takes an unexpected turn everything changes leaving none of Eve's family untouched...and calling on all the strength of a mother's love.
