Having never read a John Grisham book I dont think I am likely to read another as I do not think this can be topped! I have been told that this is not your normal Grisham book, the others are all crime novels which I do not particularly enjoy.

The novel is supposedly loosely based on John grishams own childhood and is set in 1952 in Arkansas. The main character is seven year old Luke Chandler and he lives on a cotton farm along with his Mum, Dad, Grandfather and Grandmother. The story is basically about the struggle to harvest the seasons cotton crop which in those days was all done by hand. The family hire some mexicans and also a "hill family" called the Spruills to help them. The Spruills are a dodgy family and have three children;

Tally a beautiful daughter and the object of Lukes affections
Hank a violent troublemaker
Trot a retard

There are many tribulations , most of them involving the Spruills or the Latcher family who live on the adjacent farm to the Chandlers and Lukes Uncle Ricky who is away at war, and Luke finds he is burdened down by everybodies secrets.

Not a lot can be said about the plot without giving too much away but it is a real page turner and kept me totally engrossed. It was quite interesting reading about how people lived only 50 years ago and can be a bit of an eye opener. It could be quite violent on one page, had me laughing out loud on the next and then was really sweet on the next!

The one thing I can safely say is that this novel had the best ending that I have ever come across. Through most of the book I was trying to work out how it could end as the whole novel is only set over a couple of months. But when the end comes I was torn whether to be happy or sad or both. Read it to see what I mean!

I would recommend this book to anybody who loves a good story without being too heavy going.

As I said I have no intentions of reading another Grisham novel but if somebody wishes to convince me there is another book by him or anyone else as good as this please let me know!
