A delicious sardine with grated carrot” is offered to an unhappy elephant for tea,
“I can’t wait’ Grunts Mr. Large.
Jill Murphy has written a simple children’s story about a family of elephants who have to go on an enforced diet by Mrs. Large who has decided she is too fat. Not only does she recommend a healthy diet but a healthy life style as well. No T.V. just a jog round the park.
Mr. Large and the children try to please, but notice that they ... ...in the form of a lovely cake from Granny. Will they eat it?
The story has a double meaning from the cake, and pieces of it, and the saying that something is as easy as ‘a piece of cake’
Jill Murphy is an author and illustrator, the illustrations are large clear, bright and colourful.
On one page Mrs. Large is complaining about how fat she is, the illustrations show her in a pink slip with fluffy pink slippers. There are fascinating expressions ...

A Piece of Cake
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
This is another children’s book by Jill Murphy which I love because it demonstrates a rather true portrayal of family life using the Large family (a family of elephants). The book was first published in 1989 by Walker Books London. The book is a hardback book, which cost £6.99 although it is possible to find varying prices on the Internet.

The story
... ...funny. The story is about a family of elephants; Mrs Large, Mr Large, Lester and Luke (the sons), Laura (the daughter) and the baby. The story begins with Mrs Large deciding that she is too fat, her children disagree apart from the baby who says “Mummy’s got wobbly bits” (I love that sentence although when I was little my mum wasn’t impressed when I repeated it and directed it at her!!) and so she puts the whole family on a healthy living diet, the ...

A piece of cake, a book written for children by Jill Murphy. Jill Murphy writes lots of books for children I found this in the charity shop in good condition for 10p r,r,p £4.99.When I see a good book for Adrian’s library in the charity shop I buy it. . The theme of this book is mother elephant thinking she is fat and going on a diet. Lots of children will experience their mothers dieting so they will relate to the theme in this book.
The ... ...bathroom scales, and there is a picture of a creamy birthday cake. The pictures will help the independent reader to enjoy the story.
The story is written clearly. The words suitable for a reader of about 7 yrs old. The tale tells of mum deciding she is too fat (baby says mummy’s got wobbly bits) so everyone is going on a diet.

..., none in his mouth.
The illustrations are big and bold, and children will happily point out detail. Some reception children I read it to were amazed because Marlon watches tv with his dummy in his mouth and his bottle by his side ("a baby") but then he's allowed out by himself. Children often amaze me with the things they notice.
the noo noo snatcher is quite ingenious, being made with a coat hanger, spade and some string, and children will wonder how it could work, but then, so do I!

...When I read this to a group of 4 and 5 year olds today, it was really hard to believe that this book is infact a quarter of a century old, God how old does that make me feel!!
Written in 1980, this was JillMurphy's fist picture book and was commended for the Kate Greenaway Medal.
Jill had already written the Worst Witch stories which are still enjoyed by the Year 2 children at my school, it has to be said though, it's predominantly the girls who enjoy this series.
Peace At Last, however is 'unisex' in the sense that it is enjoyed by the girls and boys I read it to.
