"A Place to Call Home"

This is a book about a mum and her young child who escape an abusive relationship at the beginning of the book. Her husband did not have any respect for her and used to beat her and frightened them both so much with the beatings that her young child lost the ability to speak.

Ayesha and her child, Sabina, board a bus from Milton Keynes and travel to London. There they visit a woman's refuge office, where the woman kindly tells them that she has no places for them. She does, however, have a friend who she can call. That friend is call Crystal and Crystal stays with Hayden, a former pop star who owns a big home. Both Crystal and another woman, Joy, have been taken in by Hayden and Crystal knows that there will be no problem with Ayesha coming to stay there too.

Ayesha and Sabina settle in well - so well that they bring some light to the house, which had been a bit bleak when they moved in. Hayden used to spend his time holed up in a room living on sandwiches - he had suffered in his life too and was now sad. As Crystal is not big on cooking, Ayesha's culinary skills were very appreciated when she moved in and Hayden began to venture out of his room more and more. Sabina became well loved by Hayden, Crystal and Joy too.

Unfortunately, things don't last and Suresh - Ayesha's ex husband - made it his business to find her. There is an incident at Hayden's when Ayesha knows that Suresh has found her. She takes Sabina and she flees, much to the upset of Hayden, Crystal and Joy. You can really feel the life leaving the house when they leave it.

It is up to you now to read this book and see how things work out. I definitely recommend it, it is a brilliant read, as all Carole Matthews books are.

What I loved about this book is how things work out for everyone and how some people who deserve it get their come-uppance.

I don't think that there is anything about this book that I didn't like, apart from maybe Ayesha and Bean not getting to say goodbye properly to the people she had grown to love, but that kind of works itself out too.

Carole Matthews has written many other books and they are all really good read, all have shortish chapters and brilliant storylines.

I got my copy from my local library, where you could try too - or if you want to buy a copy you could try ebay or Amazon.
