Advantages: Highly addictive adaptation of a superb boardgame, new features provide a greater challenge. Disadvantages: A bug can cause the "Ultimate Risk" game to crash.
The original boardgame Risk translated into a computer game may not sound to many people like the most riveting of ways to spend an hour or two; you might ask why venture into such a boring, geekish domain? Those people obviously haven’t ever played Risk! Not that I have played to original boardgame myself, but I understand it has been translated into PC game format very accurately.
However the computer game is not merely a more expensive version of the board game. Yes you can play this version (with a few extra features) and save yourself a lot of time and effort in finding 4 or 5 other players to spend hours playing with, or you can play a more advanced game that involves such features as generals, unforeseen disasters (in varying terrains, e.g. soldiers dying of yellow fever in the jungle), rebels and a computerised alliance ...

, an 18-year-old girl. All take their places in this beautifully choreographed book at exactly the right time.
'The Shell Seekers' was a ground-breaking book in more ways than one. For one thing, it was the book which lifted Rosamunde Pilcher from a little-known writer of short-stories to a best-selling novelist. For another, it broke just about every 'rule' of novel-writing and yet was a resounding success. Prior to this I had never read a novel that revolved around a grandmother, but despite being younger myself I could relate to Penelope strongly. Perhaps this is because the author was herself in her sixties when she wrote it.
The first time I read this book, I rushed through it, eager to find out what happened - as much as I could rush through a book of over 650 pages, anyway. There were parts which saddened me; inevitably ...
Advantages: Beautifully preserved and evocative Disadvantages: STEEP
I've always wondered why Robin Hood's Bay was in North Yorkshire and not in Nottinghamshire. One explanation might be that Nottinghamshire, being landlocked, is not over-endowed with bays. Another is the sheer logistics of moving it from one county to another.
Robin Hood's Bay is around 5 miles south of Whitby, and some 15 miles north of Scarborough on the North Sea coast of North Yorks. I've researched a little, and I can find no explanation of why this place has such an interesting name - it doesn't matter anyway.
There are records dating back from 1536, apparently, of a small settlement of around 50 houses and 20 fishing boats but nothing about its namesake. Besides, the locals prefer to call it Bay Town.
There may be some tenuous connection to the 'Prince of Thieves' though. Fishing has always been the mainstay of this ...

Life has not turned out the way that Dan Porter had planned. He thought that when he married Jackie twenty-five years before he would be providing for her and their family until he could retire to a small house on the Devon coast and sit with a smug smile on his face knowing that he had not only done his bit to perpetuate the human race but had achieved it with distinction. But life doesn't always turn out the way you imagine it will. Firstly Jackie's little job turned into a high-powered executive position with a top fashion house which required most of her time and attention leaving only a sliver of a moment for her parenting and home-making duties. Secondly that he would suffer an out-of- character brainstorm leave his safe job and start up a business on his own - but customers had not come rushing to his door. Dan becomes a house husband - and most of his time is spent studying his empty email inbox. Approaching fifty and having read a magazine article he thinks of a new brainwave - to upsticks from London buy a croft in Scotland and take over a mail order business with Jackie. The family are not amused...
