Berlin is where Anna lived before Hitler when she was still a German child; before she spoke a word of English before her family had all become refugees. Long before her happy new existence in London. But Mama is there dangerously ill. Anna is forced to go back to deal with questions of life and death to face old fears and to discover the past which she has so long shut away.

...Out Of The Hitler Time is the compilation of what was originally three separate books written by JudithKerr:
When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit
The Other Way Round
A SmallPersonFarAway
These three books together follow one family’s story during and after World War Two. The books are based on JudithKerr’s own experiences, as she tells us in a short piece at the end of the book.
The family in question is a German Jewish family, Anna, her elder brother Max and their parents. The first book follows their flight in the early 1930s from Germany, first to Switzerland then France and finally ending up in Britain. The second book covers the time of the war, with the family in Britain, and the third book tells us of their life afterwards when the children have grown up and made their own lives.
The book is written from Anna’s own...

Brief Review
Goodbye Mog is probably my favourite children’s book, written and Illustrated by JudithKerr. The book tells us about the passing of a family’s cat, told from the cat’s point of view. This unusual perspective immediately increased my interest in the outcome. Mog passes away and the family mourn, while Mog watches on as a ghost cat. The family get a new kitten, who is constantly frightened of everything. So Mog steps in and teaches the cat how to be a good pet. Finally the kitten becomes a good pet, and is no longer frightened. The family are happy that they’ve finally got a new family pet, but, and I quote. “But I’ll always remember Mog”. This is by far the best children’s book about coping with bereavement, it handles the subject impeccably.
Personal Response

...***Background***
JudithKerr hasn't always had an easy life. In fact when she was only nine years of age she had to flee Berlin with her family from the Nazis. Her personal experiences are obviously why some of her more serious works are on the happenings of that time in history and she is well known for her book entitled, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit.
As well as those more serious books, she is also the author of the popular Mog the cat books and a popular one in our house called The Tiger Who Came To Tea.
***The Story***
"One day Mog was coming home to her garden.
She had been on a mouse hunt all night and she was very tired.
Mog thought, 'I need a big sleep.'"
Before she goes off to have her nap she checks that the garden is how she left it and then goes into the house where the family are sitting discussing a cat...
