Well the series so far is not complete; as many will know we wait hungrily for the 4th book “A Feast for Crows”. Many would wonder what makes Martins book so great to warrant a whole household to fight over the only copies in the house (well in my house anyway!). It is written in the most compelling detail, with characters you would love as your own friends and family and characters that are hateful, deceitful and absolutely vile that they either deserve your admiration for having that kind of ambition or your unimaginable loathing.

With fantastical backdrop of Westeros, we are given the many powerful Houses (and few that aren’t) who are the players of the Game of Thrones where to lose is to lose everything. The ever gathering threat from the north of the Ice Wall and the army massing from the Lands of the Summer Sea, the land of Westeros and its Iron Throne is fair game for all who wish to try to take it. With feuding “Kings and a Queen” it is a series with no clear cut winner.

The story begins in the north of Westeros with the House Stark and its Warden Lord Eddard Stark, ten odd years after the revolt of the kingdom against King Aerys II. A mad king from the House of Targaryens, (in which the resulting war obliterated the House and only two survives who fled to the Summer Isle) was succeeded by Robert House of Baratheon. The House Stark is thrown into intrigue, deception and betrayal when they join the King and his court. At court you meet many of the characters, such as Tyrion of House Lannister, a brother to the Queen Cersei. Tyrion is a twisted little dwarf who is despised for his wit as well for his looks. But is he all that he seems. This is all the enjoyment comes from the series. No person is clear cut evil or good as is so popular in many fantasy novels. In fact each character is very real in the sense that they do what they have to do to survive, with their ambition and with their actions. I really don’t want to tell you more because then it would just spoil it for you.

When I began reading the series I wasn’t sure what to think. It was a completely new way of writing with each chapter concentrating from one character at a time. Instead, of getting confused, I gathered a better understanding of each character and it was an ingenious way of plot and character development. (You even understand the reason why the baddies do what they do! A new experience for me!!). This is the first series, which has actually got me excited, made me cry and also made me almost cheer for the bad guys, well for one of them anyway. My favourite characters are Arya, Rob, Jon and of course Tyrion.

Martin is not afraid from the unusual setting he has decided to write this epic fantasy. In fact it works so well that it adds to the readability to the whole story. Nor is he afraid from a little blood letting from the “good” Houses. There is a magical element within the story but so perfectly woven that it feels real. Death on a rampage no character is safe. With battles, knights and lords this series is indeed that has it all.

“-Against the backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, the price of glory is measured in blood” (Book two, A Song of Ice and Fire)

So tell me who will you be rooting for, Cersei, Tyrion, Jon, and Bran or will you be Arya, Little Finger, Jamie or even Gregor.

I am reading this series just now and I love Martin's style. The fact that he just suddenly decides to kill off a main character with little or no warning, makes for an interesting, if emotional, read. Nice review --- Arla
