up in the immediate post-war era. For Elsie, though, the fighting isn't over. Not only does she have to cope with the indifference of her father, himself adjusting to family life after the war, she also has to run the gauntlet of a vicious bully and cope with being a scholarship girl at the local grammar school. Through her work with the local repertory theatre, Elsie's confidence slowly grows and she finds herself able to confront all her demons. This is the rich and dramatic story of a young girl who manages to overcome many obstacles in her attempts to lead a normal life. Michelle Magorian's great strength is her ability to understand both the vulnerabilities and the strengths of her characters, and to imbue even the most distressing events with elements of humour and warmth. --Philippa Reece
Advantages: Entrancing, wonderful and gripping. Disadvantages: none that I can think of.
...start of with this is a book with a decieving title. A Spoonful of jam is not as pleasent as it sounds. The gloriuos jam in it is not even the key word to explaining the charectaristic of this book, on the contrary this book is a battle of acceptance for a girl who struggles to understand what is so annoying about her that makes everybody want to beat her up and tell her that she has no place in their lives as a person but only as a mop to clean. ... ...a mothers grip and although the second world war left more than just shattered buildings and debris whatever corner you turn, the hopes of a restored world still reign among the half broken kitchen stoves and the moth-eaten, cheap dinner tables. But somehow our heroine survives and you could even say flourishes with the help of her two brothers, a kind hearted theatre keeper and a middleaged stout, strict yet warm governess.

A Great book Review ofA Spoonful of Jam - Michelle Magorianby
Kerialex
Advantages: Great book, that intices you and makes you read on Disadvantages: not suited to everyone
A spoonful of Jam is a great book that looks at how a young girl survives post wartime Britain, and the changes in her family. It features the main themes of social class and family.
It tells of a young girl called Elsie, who has an interest in the theatre, and a feeling of not belonging elsewhere. The story follows her over the summer holidays, as she embarks on her own adventure, working in the theatre, finding a place where she does belong and ... ...interacting with his daugther. As a parellel to the main story, Elsie's will to please her father and make him proud is a realistic battle and again keeps the reader inthrawled. It is written in an amazing way, in which Michelle Magorian draws the reader in, and uses humour to keep the tale moving. a good read for anyone. ...
