To start of with this is a book with a decieving title. A Spoonful of jam is not as pleasent as it sounds. The gloriuos jam in it is not even the key word to explaining the charectaristic of this book, on the contrary this book is a battle of acceptance for a girl who struggles to understand what is so annoying about her that makes everybody want to beat her up and tell her that she has no place in their lives as a person but only as a mop to clean. Yet something about this book is kind and gentle like a mothers grip and although the second world war left more than just shattered buildings and debris whatever corner you turn, the hopes of a restored world still reign among the half broken kitchen stoves and the moth-eaten, cheap dinner tables. But somehow our heroine survives and you could even say flourishes with the help of her two brothers, a kind hearted theatre keeper and a middleaged stout, strict yet warm governess.
Many tears rolled solemnly down my face during this enchanting read, but overall happiness had it's say as well, which really did prove Michelle Magorian's Extreme talent at writing a wonderful, magical book like this one.
