Advantages: Amazing subject matter, well-handled and excellent characterisation Disadvantages: May be a little long for some - but I didn't want it to end.
This amazing novel had me gripped from the very first line! I'm a massive fan of SebastianFaulks, but had been put of this novel by reviews which said there were passages which were too long winded and scientific. Lesson one - read it yourself and make your own opinion! This is an incredible book, not quite up there with Birdsong (my favourite book of all time - so far) but still amazing.
I can't describe the story better than Fauks himself so:
"The story begins in the 1870s with the lives of two young men: Jacques Rebière, a peasant's son in Brittany, and Thomas Midwinter, a merchant's son in Lincolnshire. Jacques has a naturally scientific turn of mind, in which he is encouraged by the help of the local priest. He is inspired by his desire to find a cure for the mysterious illness of his elder brother Olivier -- who hears ...
Advantages: Moving, well written, great sense of realism Disadvantages: None
Strangely I was first attracted to this book by the picture on the cover. It shows a soldier standing over a grave. As someone with an interest in military history, especially twentieth Century, I thought It may be of interest to me,
I later read a review of it in one of the national newspapers and having liked what I read, decided that I would give it a try.
I had not even heard of SebastianFaulks before ,let alone read any of his other books.
I was expecting a First World War story, full of action and tales of bravery-what I got was so much more.
The books main character is Stephen Wrayford. The story begins in France 1910.A young man, Stephen is sent by his factory owning employer from England to France in order to try and learn some modern working practises that would help improve his employers companies prospects. He lodges ...
Advantages: graphic and poignant while modern Disadvantages: starts a bit slowly and ends abruptly, protagonist at times unlikable,
The novel tells the story of Stephen, a young Englishman in early twentieth-century France, and of his granddaughter?s mission to translate his story from his diaries, during the 1970s.
The main theme of ?birdsong? is the Great War. Faulks also explores the complexity and mysteriousness of relationships amongst men and between men and women during the early 1900s as well as presenting various attitudes and misconceptions towards the war at the time it was fought, and how those views have changed 60 years on.
Despite the fact that Faulks is a modern, late twentieth century author, his depiction of the Great War is harrowing, graphic and poignant. However, his protagonist Stephen is in some ways 'unlikable'. He is portrayed as cold hearted and inconsistent in his reactions. Stephen becomes caught up in a passion which is out of his ...
