Merde!!!

Advantages: Easy page turner
Disadvantages: Made me want to go back to Paris

...I have only just read a book that was first published in 2004, which I myself purchased in about 2006, and then finally read in 2008. Despite the obvious reflections about life in 2003 (the year that the story was set in, just to add further confusion to my readers) which have the effect of dating the text somewhat, it was a very funny read and I found it a real page turner of a book.

The book in question, is A Year In The Merde, by ...
...who is offered a year's contract by a French business man he had previously met in London. The current businessman's interests were meat products and offal. The business man, Jean-Marie Martin, wanted our hero, Paul West, to help him diversify into setting up English tea shops in Paris, to bring tea drinking to the nation of Coffee drinkers. So, Paul gives up his life in the UK, and throws himself into the Parisian lifestyle at the beginning of the ... more

...in the Merde" was offered a job in Paris some of his friends tried to dissuade him, using the age-old gibes against our friends across the Channel. Unperturbed he took up the offer and used the experience to write this, his first novel. Paul West ventures to Paris to act as a consultant to a French food company who are planning to open a chain of British style "tea rooms" in the French capital. He is contracted for a year which actually means from ...

Before the final page our unlikely hero finds himself at the mercy of a string of amorous French girlfriends determined to thaw out the "freezing" English lover, making a midnight dash to help his boss's daughter empty the contents of her dressing room and embroiled in local right-wing politics when he tries to buy a country retreat. "A Year in ...

An Englishman Abroad

Advantages: Funny, witty and literate
Disadvantages: Doo-doo you really want to know?

...case you look aside in a rather embarrassed fashion. Stephen Clarke was hired by a big shot Parisian businessman to start up a chain of English Tea rooms in the French capital. This lively, slightly fictionalised, account of his sejourn in France is quite politically unsound, painfully honest and pretty funny . He goes in search of beautiful women in beautiful underwear and instead finds himself stepping in dog excrement on every pavement - hence ...
...the women are and what a lot of sex he has! PLOT The chapters rotate around 9 months of the working year, from September (the 'rentree', or return from summer holiday), to June, when everyone is using up the last of their annual leave. Parisians spend the entire month of August on vacation, leaving the city deserted for the tourists. Hence when everyone returns to work in September, there is a lot of cheek and air kissing all round, even in the ...

Tea for Two

Advantages: Clarke can spin a good yarn
Disadvantages: Bit long winded

Merde Actually is the second in the Merde series of books by Stephen Clarke. The first one was A Year In The Merde, and was set in 2003. Our hero, Paul West, had been invited to France to help a company with the dubious acronym of VD to open English style tea shops. Although the first book does reach a conclusion, it was clear while reading it, that there would be a sequel to the novel, and so I went in search at Waterstones for this. Merde Actually was then followed by Merde Happens, and lastly (or at least, until he writes the next one) there is Dial M for Merde. Clarke has used a different writing style with this second novel. Whereas the first book was written as a diary, starting in September, this second novel is written more traditionally, but is set in chapters, with each chapter broken down into sections. The chapters have ...
