only for the quality of the performances, but also for that of the recordings. Take the Young Person's Guide: every solo instrument is naturally highlighted, but within an ambience that allows the full orchestra to make a real impact in the closing fugue. And with Britten giving them their head, the LSO really let rip! There's still no better work to introduce the orchestra to enquiring minds, and the other two works featured here continue that process of learning through enjoyment at which Britten had few equals. The Frank Bridge Variations take a quaint melody by the composer's mentor, and fashion a wealth of new ideas from it--running the gamut of emotions from the uproarious to the tragic. The Simple Symphony is the teenage Britten's artful recycling of a number of tunes written in boyhood--a testament to his startlingly early maturity. The LSO strings combine virtuosity and insight to telling effect. Educational, enlightening and, above all, fun! --Richard Whitehouse

...The YoungPerson's Guide to Saving the Planet
This environmental information book by Debbie Silver and Bernadette Vallely is one of the clearest and most informative for young people. It is set out in alphabetical format. Addressing each issue as it comes up in alphabetical order. It covers acid rain to vegetarianism, the ozone layer to whales. I found it very easy to look up what I wanted. It tells you all about the issue and then tells you what you can do to help. You end up well informed and able to develop your own opinions. A good buy....

Advantages: Three generations of two separate families are brought together in the story with relative ease Disadvantages: Author's reputation may put readers off - but shouldn't as will always be a great author
...The Television adaptation of this book (Peter Strauss as Abel and Sam Neil as Kane) in the 1980s brought the novel to my attention and so my first read of it.
Archer's clever notion of bringing together from opposite sides of the world and opposite backgrounds, two men born on the same day is awe inspiring. I was gripped at each turn as the two lives of the young men were etched on my imagination until their fateful meeting in the USA.
The story then plots the ensuing feud between the men which knows no bounds for them both on personal and professional levels, but which the next generations of their family try hard to ignore.
Its a book that is so hard for me to put down everytime I read it - which is often. And a book which led me to the other excellently written offerings by Archer - especially the two follow-ups to this book "The...
