Abbey National is the most difficult bank to deal with. Their customer care is very poor and they are even rated as one of the worst banks.
When we decided to open another bank account we found Abbey to be the most conveniently placed. So my husband and I went to open a bank account with them. They seemed very nice and glad to have us as customers. The bank was very neat and tidy. I never realised that what would come later would put me off this bank for the rest of my life.
The problems started when I found only £30 in my account yet there should have been more money in my account. Abbey had not informed me that we had gone over the overdraft or that indeed they were going to take any money out of my bank. So later that evening I phoned the bank to see if I could sort something out, it took about half an hour to get in touch with a customer service member of staff. I could not remember how much money my husband got paid into his account, but I knew we must have more than this. Abbey informed us that they had taken the money out to pay an overdraft. The member of staff was very abrupt and told us in no uncertain terms that it was our own fault for going over drawn. Whilst I understand this I felt that Abbey should have informed us that we had gone over drawn and given warning when they were going to take the money out of our account.
Even after explaining personal details the lady showed no sympathy. The customer care is dreadful. Amongst all the banks I have ever banked with this has got to be the worst. In fact, they are the worst bank I have ever come across for bank charges. They charge £5 per day, no questions asked. At least at my other bank they actually consider paying some of it back.
To be disrespected by a bank like this is awful. I tried to stay calm throughout, but the lady at the other end would not listen to a word I had to say. I never knew they would take so much money from us. I thought Abbey was a good bank, but they're not. If you have a problem they don't want to know. Yet if you are in credit they do everything they can to persuade you to take out loans or other premier facilities. After reading other opinions it seems I am not the only one who has had a bad experience with Abbey. They need to seriously improve their customer service and the amount of money they take off people when they go overdrawn.
