As most people will now know Abbey National has now become Abbey. The banking service is just as good since the name change if not a little better.
I registered for online banking when I was sixteen. I'd had my account for twelve years by then. I had found all the services I used from Abbey to be safe and reliable. Living in the sticks I rarely visited my local branch as it was a twenty mile, fourty minute bus journey with unreliable services. I wanted to keep in touch with my funds and new services available from Abbey, online seemed like the best way to go.
I tried to register online at first. I went to the Abbey homepage and clicked on the Online Banking link. The page informs you that there are three main ways to register; in a branch (far too far for me); at a cash point (the only ones near me weren't bank machines and charged, i doubted they'd provide this service) or over the telephone (AHA!)
I rung the telephone number provided, admittedly the service wasn't great - they took a long time to answer and the on hold music was awful. When I did get through to an operator, however, they were friendly and helpful. There were a few simple questions to answer but the entire process only took a few minutes. There were some security questions but nothing silly, I must say, this put my mind at rest a little.
A few days after my phone call I received a letter from Abbey National with my passcode. I waited expectantly for my registration number, this did take nearly a week to arrive. Once these two pieces of information had reached my it only took me a few moments to get online and checking my balance. I only had to enter the two codes they had sent me and a few pieces of personal information and I was in.
Subsequently to this, each time you log in to the e-banking service you will require your card number, passcode and registration number. I changed my codes as soon as I logged in for some extra security.
You enter onto a personal home page with your accounts and balances. You can then click on the account you want to view. Once you are in this screen you can check direct debits, make transfers, view your statement, etc. You can ask for duplicate statements or replacement cards online. I have found these services useful as when my last card expired I was not sent a replacement, so I requested a card online and within three days it had arrived. You can also request or increase your overdraft, however I have found Abbey to be quite stingey with their overdrafts. I pay hundreds of pounds into my account each month and I have been declined for any overdraft at all. On my other account I have been given a large overdraft and I pay in the same amount of money each month. The full list of services is as follows 1.Balances 2. Payments 3. Statements 4. Standing Orders 5. Direct Debits 6. Regular Transfers 7. Set up a New Payment 8. Move Money 9. Pay Money In 10. Overdraft 11. Replace Cards 12. Duplicate Statements 12. Telephone Banking
A new service that Abbey have begun to offer is online credit card banking. This has been a great help to me as I do not use my Abbey credit card but my boyfriend does. There are a number of credit card services online which are really handy. 1. View and print your last six statements 2. View recent transactions and payements 3. Pay your credit card account online 4. View your PIN securely 5. Request a credit limit increase 6. Add authorised users 7. Change personal details 8. Transfer balances...........and more This is the list of services given before you even log in, these are the main services provided.
I have on accassion forgotten my password to either service. It is easy to change your codes to log in, the process is also very quick. This makes life much easier, especially for my very forgetful boyfriend.
There are also a lot of services available on the Abbey homepage. You can apply for loans, mortgages, savings accounts or just find some information on types of insurance Abbey offer or current interest rates. The website is very comprehensive, however, a lot of the services simply refer you to a branch or telephone banking service. I do think this is helpful though because at least you can find out whether the products available are appropriate to you.
I don't think the design of the Abbey website and online banking service is not always ideal and sometimes it is not always clear where the necessary links will be found. Most of the time it is possible to navigate through the site with relative ease and I will definitely continue to use the service. I also use Lloyds online banking which I do find is much easier and offers more services, but at least Abbey does exactly what is says on the tin.
I would recommend this service to anyone with an Abbey account. It allows you to check your balance, make transfers and request other services. It is relatively easy to use, easy to set up and I think quite secure. You can change your security details whenever you like. I do this on a regular basis, just in case someone has found my passcodes. I don't think this would happen but I like to be on the safe side.
Hope this has helped you decide whether you would be able to take advantage of another service offered by Abbey.
Thanks for reading. All comments, positive and negative will be gratefully received.
Advantages: check account balances and details, transfer money, pay bills online Disadvantages: you don't get to chat to other customers while waiting in a queue
...current and savings accounts with Abbey National for many years now. Initially there was a small branch within a few minutes' walk from our home, but unfortunately that closed down, and while most transactions happen automatically, it was a bit of a nuisance having to drive four or five miles to an Abbey branch if we needed to do anything out of the ordinary. Telephone banking was all very well in theory, but any time we tried to use the service ... ...delighted with the introduction of Abbey National online banking. We were already somewhat used to secure online transactions, and while I had initial reservations about having our entire bank account online, their promises of security were sufficiently reassuring to encourage us to sign up. This proved to be simple: we spoke to someone at the branch, and they arranged for our accounts to become available online, connected to my debit card. We were ...

...been banking with Abbey, formerly Abbey National now for years. Their branch service is wonderful, and all positions are nearly always open, meaning I never have to queue, unlike my other bank, NatWest, where the queuing times are hurrendous.
Abbey, always seen as the scruffier of the big banks has recently changed itself into the bright, jargon free and friendlier bank on the high street, with branches all over the country in nearly every area ... ...much, do I bank with Abbey on-line? Simple. Because I dont have to leave the house! Read on to find out my other reasons!
~How do I register?~
If you bank with Abbey, you can register by phoning their telephone banking service. You can also register in the branch, or, the easiest and quickest of the lot, at the Abbey cash machine. These are located outside all of their branches, outside supermarkets and on retail prks and in shopping centres.

Advantages: Makes life easier Disadvantages: Poor navigation; Unprofessional site; slow
...I took advantage of Abbey National’s online banking facility as soon as I’d heard they had one. No more waiting in telephone queues and talking to a Scottish lass (although, I do admittedly miss that sometimes – lovely accent); no more waiting in queues at one of the high street branches; having access to my account anytime I wanted; being able to juggle my money around without feeling embarrassed by my list of requests when phoning ... ...requested internet access to your Abbey National accounts, the kind staff will then send you a registration number and password – both of which can be changed when you first enter the site and log on, to something that you’re more likely to remember.
THE SITE
Err…well…I would say not particularly professional looking and would probably need changing in the near-future (I have seen other online banking websites which look, ...

...a normal banking customer of Abbey National for about 10 years and as a computer industry professional was eager to try thier e-banking service as soonas it came out.
So how is it?
Well the service has been very useful indeed as I can keep much better track of my finances and even move money around so it is in the best place for interest.
The service has a cumbersome interface but it works most of the time and I am sure will improve with time. ... ...been based upon what is offered via a service till at present (Apart form drawing out money...) but with extra services as well.
Security is obviously a big concern but the login procedure require 3 seperate numbers and seems a pain at first but you soon remember them and then you see the benefit that it would be almost impossible to crack.
As whole it is a useful and fairly easy to use service although it needs improvement if they are to gain ...

have no divine right to free banking), you cannot expect much more. The poor experiences I have described above are also few and far between, simply as I do find Abbey's onlinebanking service highly convenient, and help you avoid using the telephones or branch (for basic day to day banking). Another plus I have found with this bank, is the fairly high interests rates they can occasionally offer, with my bank account giving me 6% interest, which is quite handy.
With the Abbey being owned by Santander (though I do not necessarily think overseas ownership is always beneficial), the immediate future of the bank seems secure, with the company being one of the few to make a profit during the credit crunch. With Natwest (rbs), barclay, lloyds and halifax, making such grave mistakes over the past few years in handling their finances, I personally ...

Advantages: So quick Disadvantages: Sometimes down
I have been a member on HSBC onlinebanking for quite a while now - so long that I can't remember! Probably at least 2 years, so I must admit I'm not hot on how long it takes them to send you all your login details but as far as I remember it wasn't too long. I am also an onlinebanking member of Barclays, Abbeys, Tesco Personal Finance, ING and Yorkshire Bank so I think I have a good view of comparing them!
You need an IB (internet banking number) to log in firstly, unfortunately you can't choose for the computer to remember it but I just save it on the computer somewhere hidden, probably not 100% safe but oh well. Then you need to enter your date of birth and then certain numbers of your security numbers. This isn't as complicated as other sites where you have to enter certain numbers of a security code and password.

Advantages: Excellent hassle free service and good APRs Disadvantages: None
I have held several bank accounts with several different banks. All of which eventually have let me down. I decided to give on-linebanking a try with my previous bank ( Abbey National ) and found there system quite difficult to use.
Then the Abbey started to mess me about, reducing my overdraft and various other things. Enough was enough.
I decided to give FIrst Direct a try. The signing up service was good and easy. The transfer of Direct debits and standing orders easy.
I have set up all my credit cards as Bill payments, and organise all my banking once a month online. No hassle, no problems.
I would reccomend then to anyone looking to move banks or open their first account. Well done First Direct. A bank that does like to say " YES " to its customers, and one who will also listen to them. ...
