My son purchased one of these just over a year ago ( I think they were around £299 then) because he was concerned about taking the almighty and much loved macbook to University every day on the train ( we love our macs at least as much as we love the dog in this house). I think he carried this thing for about a week before he decided he could bear it no longer and the mac regained its rightful place in his bag.
It was then passed onto his brother, one week after the one year guarantee expired, the pin in the centre of the power inlet socket, snapped off. We were quoted £50 for someone to take a look, £60 to do the repair and another £25 to send it back to us, plus of course whatever it cost us to send it to them. I ended up going to a local shop who did it for £50 but in all honesty I questioned if it was even worth spending that much.
Two weeks later the backlight went out and it could only be used if it was connected to an external monitor. A couple of weeks after that, the power plug, ( the end that plugs into the laptop), started to go funny and the laptop would only charge if you held the thing in place.
A week later it was sold on ebay for spares or repair. Lesson learned. Buy cheap buy twice.
I would like to say that it would suit a child / teen due to the great price but in my experience it needs to be pretty durable and robust to withstand most kids and this was just way too fragile / poor quality.

Advantages: Lightweight and compact Disadvantages: Speaker volume
I bought this Acer to complete work for university and it is very reliable. It is small and light which is great if you have to carry it around a lot. It is also really sturdy - mine has been bashed about as I carry it constantly to and from university and I have never had a problem with it. The battery lasts for ages - nearly 2 hours and charges really quickly - just over an hour. The screen is bright and very clear. The hard drive is 2 hard drives ...

Quick review of Acer Aspire 5050
doesn't work with vista - non compatible - firstly you need at least 1.5 GB RAM just for it to function - but i've had 4 now, and all had the same problem of just random freezing - and you can't downgrade to xp due to proprietary bios and hardware - absolute piece of junk - you would be better burning your money ...

Advantages: Good all round performer, light weight, price. Disadvantages: None at this price.
I have had this Acer5050 laptop for around 6 months now and it has impressed me with the amount of features it has for the price. Windows Vista Home Premium was included as standard and this proved a little troublesome at first when tranferring Windows XP programs from my old computer over but this has now been fixed with numerous upgrades from Microsoft.
The laptop has adequate hard disk space (80GB), memory and processor to play most games (I play Tiger Woods 2007 and Football Manager 2007 with no problems). I also use it for 3D design work using AutoCAD 2008 and again it is up to the task - if a little slower than my work desktop PC.
I have almost filled the hard disk with music and photos and it still performs most task quickly.
Overall a very good laptop for the price. ...
