I got my acer 5315 as part of a deal from the carphone warehouse with a mobile phone contract, so i won't say it was free because I have an 18 month contract to pay for, but it was a really good deal!! Having shopped around a bit they cost around £270-£300 to buy. I'm no computer whizz and just wanted a reliable laptop to do my work and access the internet on, this is ideal. I had never heard of acer until my boyfriend got one of their laptops last year and i've been using his since, so am now familiar with the brand and like it.
This particular model has a 15.4'' CrystalBrite LCD glossy screen, the outer casing is all black with the acer logo in silver in the middle. The screen surround is black and the keyboard is pale grey. The keyboard has quick keys at the top for WLAN settings and volume. It also features a green 'e' button in the top right corner, when pressed your WLAN signal and connection details and battery status come up on screen, this is quite handy. The keyboard and touch pad are both very comfortable to use and screen resolution is good.
The laptop came pre-installed with windows vista basic, intel celeron processor and a free 30 day trial of norton anti-virus. It also has 1GB of memory, an 80GB hard-drive, Intel Graphic Media Accelerator and DVD/RW. Acer software included is Arcade Deluxe, Acer SignalUp and Acer Video Conference. It was very easy to set up, even for me!
When I got it I followed the instructions and gave it an 8 hour charge, generally I keep it plugged into the mains when in use and when I've used it wireless the battery has lasted very well, almost two hours, so I was quite impressed with that!
The acer 5315 has three USB ports and audio and video connectors, the speakers are not very powerful but the sound is clear. So far i've had no problems connecting to the internet with it. I'm not keen on pointing out disadvantages on products that I really like but the only ones with this, and they are really minor, is as i've already said the speakers and because the screen is glossy if your not careful it will mark easily. It isn't the lightest of laptops but for me that isn't an issue because I use mine mainly at home.
In my opinion this laptop is fantastic for doing everyday home computing. It is best suited to people wanting mainly internet access, producing basic documents, storing and downloading music e.g. i-pod and photos. It would also be ideal for students and beginners as it is easy to set-up, reliable and doesn't require much maintainance.
I would certainly recommend this laptop to anybody considering buying one as it has all the essential features needed and is a high quality product widely available at very reasonable prices.
Good review. Be careful using the laptop plugged in all the time tho as you can ruin the battery. You should try to use it on battery power alone when ever possible and run it flat every now and again. My hubby works in The Tech Guys laptop repair centre and they get loads in for "battery not charging" for this reason. Liz xx
