This is a medium sized laptop with a 15'6" screen and a gorgeous dark-blue and fairly robust exterior frame. Acer are well known as being a cheaper alternative brand from the Sony's and Packard Bell's of the world, but have a mixed reputation in terms of how well they deliver when it comes to their laptops.
I'm pleased to be able to say that the Acer Aspire 5536 lives up to the hype, and is a well produced and easy to use laptop.
PRESENTATION ----------------------- As you would expect from a low priced machine, you have the basics but the top end of the basics. It looks stunningly smart but in an understated way, which is how I'd like a laptop to be if I were using it in public. Lifting it reveals that this is under 3KG and is easily portable. The keyboard has well defined buttons that make typing easy, and the screen is fantastic for dvd viewing - with it's mid-hi-definition resolution capability. The mouse pointer button and left-click/right click keys are conveniently placed towards the bottom left of the keyboard, rather than dead centre. I personally like this, and find it easier for typing but some don't - this is a matter of preference, and so could be a pro or con depending on your perspective. The screen is stunning in its brightness (depending on power setting selected - be aware battery life varies in accordance with this), and so it's easy to see why it's called 'Crystalbrite'. All in all, impressive stuff so far.
MEMORY, PROCESSOR AND HARDDRIVE ----------------------------------------------------------- The memory is expandable all the way up to 8GB, and comes with 3GB already installed. This will be more than enough for most people, especially as this laptop is designed for low-mid level use (not for graphics intensive games) and multi-tasking of spreadsheets, word processing, media players etc. For example, if you were to have Microsoft Works in use, then you opened internet explorer and windows media player - you shouldn't notice too much slowdown, if any as you run them all at once.
While this is due to the memory, it's also got just as much to do with the AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor. Dual-core is standard in many laptops and desktops now, and thankfully this is one of the better ones. It makes everything seamless and user-friendly, without the frustrations of slow-loading programs that used to be a factor in laptops of only a few years ago.
There is a respectable 250GB harddrive in place here too. This means that you've got plenty of room for a fair bit of music, lots of images and some video to boot. Bear in mind that if you're planning on being one of the rare few who may need even more harddisk space, then you can always purchase a decent portable harddrive for under £50, and store movies etc on that.
Games?? -------------- This laptop is designed for use with programs such as Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player, playing cd's and dvd's etc - but not generally games. You can certainly play games on there, but the graphics-heavy ones of recent years will not look the greatest and may not play at all in certain sections. This is due to the 'shared' graphics, which in effect means that the laptop doesn't have a graphics memory of its own and so shares it with the other functions and overall processor.
Bluetooth/Wi-Fi --------------------- The wi-fi connection is there and available - it's fast and reliable. There is however no bluetooth feature built-in. This is easily fixed by attaching an optional extra bluetooth-dongle (you can pick one up on ebay for around a fiver).
Overall, the Acer Aspire 5536 is a fantastic laptop for fast, basic uses and for viewing DVD's on a gorgeous bright LCD screen. It will be reliable when using it for internet browsing and getting the all important university homework done. The battery is the industry standard of around 3 hours, which is average - no more, no less. Don't go expecting to be able to play Modern Warfare 2 on this laptop, as you'll be disappointed. But then, this isn't promoted as a games laptop anyway.
Check out prices as they vary. It's fairly easy to find the laptop at under £400 on various sites, but always check up on the returns policies and overall customer satisfaction if possible before completing your purchase.
Well done Acer. You've lived up to your name on this occasion, and we'd all like to see many more great value laptops follow this one.
Advantages: 15.6" HD screen, good audio quality, price. Disadvantages: short battery life, temperature
Acer decided to add an extra Aspire Gemstone Blue model laptop. I was lucky to get a hold of him as my friend purchased it, and I was using it for a while, he asked me to install some software and configure his Vista so the notebook going to work properly. The first touch was a surprise I expected it’s going to weight more than 2.8 kg, it’s a really light notebook, and thanks to its glossy sapphire-blue Gemstone cover and intricately textured palmrest ... ...high definition CineCrystal screen that Acer installed in this notebook. The buttons are quiet, which for me is really important I hate to work with loud keyboards. Now the sound system, I’ve heard that they installed the 3rd Generation Dolby-optimized surround sound system and I was wondering how it’s going to work because last time I was fixing my other friend notebok when I wanted to listen loud to my music the speakers were “farting” instead ...

I am using this Laptop right now and i have to say it is possibly one of the only things that really is unbelievable value and quality in this modern age of mass production.
