The first thing that drew me to this laptop was the look.
Opinions seem to be split on this subject, perhaps more so than the majority of other lower priced laptops out there. But personally, I think it looks fab!
The white keyboard and trim make it stand out from the crowd a bit, offering a little more than just your plain black, black, black.
It's robust too. I've had a couple of lower end Acers in the past and the build quality was not the best. This is fine though, no bounce in the keyboard, solid hinges, no wobble on screen, I like!
I was after a nice cheap steady away laptop for the usual home usage. And this ticks all the boxes.
If you're like me and you use your home PC for the internet, streaming video clips, watching the odd DVD & playing games, then I can recommend the Acer Gemstone 5920.
With 2GB of memory and a healthy speed Core Duo processor it provides more than enough power to cope easily with the usual day to day tasks, despite having the unenviable task of running Windows Vista! ;-)
The "CrystalBrite" TFT widescreen monitor gives a perfect picture whether you're wasting your evenings on Facebook/Bebo/MySpace, or watching a DVD.
The laptop can also boast surround sound speakers, which are very good if a little on the quiet side, a little more volume would've been good in certain situations but can't grumble too much as the quality of the sound it does produce is very good.
The only gripe I have with the model I purchased was that it doesn't have integrated Bluetooth, which would've been handy at times. That being said the card reader has made up for most of these situations.
To conclude, i've had the laptop for a few months now and it's running for a good 10-12 hours a day, 5-6 days a week and it's never skipped a beat!
And any laptop with 2GB RAM, a DVD burner, webcam, card reader, Vista Home Premium, Widescreen, Surround sound, etc, etc that comes in at well under £500 is a bargain in my eyes!
I hope you found this review helpful, if you decide to buy one of these, in my humble opinion, you won't be disappointed!
Advantages: Latest technology and very cool aesthetics makes me want to eat this baby. Disadvantages: Not everything is perfect. The Aspire 5920 comes as close as I have seen
