I recently got a new ACER Laptop for my birthday. My wife gave me a budget and said as she knows nothing about them I should pick my own.
I selcted an ACER mainly because of price and spec considerations. The model I found gave me a good CPU, Memory and HDD for what other models wanted another hundered quid for.
My other experience of Acer was a travelmate that I purchased in 2000. although now heavily outperformed it nevertheless is still in good working condition, and my 7 year old enjoys using it.
With PC's you pays your money and takes your choice, and although I feel that there is little point in recomending a specific model (as they are out of date almost as soon as you buy them) I have no hesitation in recomending ACER as a manufacturert of good value laptops
