Sure, it might not smack you in the face and say 'look at me, i'm shiny!' but the acer aspire one has got to be the most reliable, sturdy and best value netbooks around.
Starting of, as i usually do, with a summary of the style of the product, the acer aspire one won't win any beauty paegents, but it is functional in it's design. Sure, i'm not a fan of the whole gap-between-screen-and-hinge look, but it works. The netbook has no real standout design features, but it isn't the ugliest netbook around (step in the advent netbooks please). The aspire ones saving grace is the ability to buy it in several colours: pink, white, blue, black, brown, red, chinchilla... with such a range it is almost certain you can find the colour for you, which normally makes the netbook more attractive anyway.
With regards to build quality, it's great, it feels like you could juggle with it and it wouldn't develop any kind of problems whatsoever. It is also very light compared to other netbooks. The surface reaches usual netbook heat of mildly-warm-but-i-haven't-burned-my-hand-off-yet temperature, so is acceptable. The keyboard is fairly spacious for a netbook and works well. Unfortunatley this means the touchpad is tiny, and the buttons are either side of it making things slightly awkward at first until you get used to it. The screen is also very good, it is clear and crisp, providing a nice change form the very dull matte lcd's around in cheaper netbooks. Connectivity is pretty standard, 3 USB's, wifi, ethernet ect.
Of course, being as cheap as it is, you would expect some specification cuts, but this is not the case. It ships in the usual netbook standard of intel atom 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM and 160GB HDD (or a 8/16 GB SDD for the solid state crowd). The laptop also ships with either a custom linux os or windows xp. The linux os was functional, but i had to install xp in the end (after a day), i just couldn't cope with not having the freedom of a real os.
the netbook performs pretty much the same as all other netbooks because of the standard specifications, making all the other mainstream netbooks that cost around £100-200 more obsolete (in my eyes at least), so it is highly recommended over any other choice. Battery life is also in line with other netbooks, i was getting about 3 hours or so.
The only real downside is that it suffers from tinny speakers like all netbooks, so don't expect to here anything even resembling bass, as this is forbidden in the netbook world.
So, to sum it up, you get a good, sturdy, reliable netbook for about £100 cheaper than the other netbooks with the same specifications, therefore i think the acer aspire one has got to be the best netbook around at the moment in terms of price.
