I searched for a Sat Nav hoping to find something under £150 and was shocked to find this at £100. Really cheap price and seemed to come with a lot.
I read that the Sat Nav included 'Points of Interest' such as hotels, restaurants and petrol stations and thought this was a great price to include all these features as well as the Microsoft Office package on the PDA.
I was a bit bothered when it arrived though that it only came with a car charger, so how was I supposed to use the thing in my house? The only way of recharging the battery which was pretty much dead on arrival, was to sit in my car and wait (and get hounded by the environmental lot) or...to buy an AC poweradaptor which cost £30-£40 (ridiculous price) So the first week I went without and just used the Sat Nav once to see if it worked, which it did.
The Sat Nav itself is actually quite good for the price, the maps are very clear and the spoken
directions, although not always the quickest route, gives you plenty of time when on the motorway or dual carriage ways to move into the correct lane. The voice will tell you on a motorway that you are exiting 2 miles in advance, so that you are not panicking about moving into the correct lane. On normal roads, there is usually a warning of around 500 yards before you are turning or joining a roundabout. The day/night feature is a great idea, I'm distracted by imaginary shiny red balls as it is so to be able to dim the maps and not be distracted is good for me and everyone else as you shouldn't even be looking at it whilst driving! Only distracting thing is the flashing blue light to say that you have the GPS on and the flashing green light to say that the device is being charged up.
Another useful feature is the 'History' button, saves you typing in addresses over and over again. Really quick way of retrieving address.
Typing in address is a bit of a pain. For the first month, I had to type in the address, city and number of where I was going to because I couldn't figure out how to just use the postcode but there is a way of just entering postcodes, I actually recommend entering the address though, much more reliable.
If you choose or accidentally ignore the directions, the system quickly alters the route and either redirects you based on the direction you are going, or finds you a suitable place for doing a u-turn.
I have had a few problems with the signal, the antenna needs to be pointing into the sky in order to pick up any satellite signals, it won't work whilst sitting on the seat next to you however once the signal has been picked up you can move the pda around without worrying so much about losing your signal. The other problem I have had is that I am sometimes told to do a u turn when it is not necessary, this is usually when in some kind of industrial estate and may be due to maps not being updated etc.
As I said before, I read that Points of Interest were a good feature of the N35, but they aren't actually included. You have to update which costs quite a lot of money and defies the point of buying a cheap Sat Nav!
Another problem I have is that, there is no 'shut down' option like on a computer, you just press the button on the side and switch it off. I have done this a few times whilst 'Destinator '(the sat nav application) has been left on, then next time I've tried to use the N35, it freezes on that screen and doesn't allow any usage which means resetting it and having to type all your user details in again as well as going through the whole 'tap screen' setup, so, not always the most reliable device.
The other minor problem which is probably only just worth mentioning, The pen acts as a mouse and as you can move things around with the mouse, you can do this with the pen too. When you stop to look at the map, it is possible to move the map around the screen using the pen, to see other streets around or zoom in or out on streets. However, you also bring up the main menu by tapping the pen onto the map and sometimes when you want the menu you get the scroll and when you want the scroll you get the menu. My advice is trick it, pretend you want the other and you'll be fine!
I can't really comment too much on the actual PDA side of it as I bought it as a Sat Nav. I have used it a couple of times messing around and find it really easy to navigate around if you are familar with Windows. My 9 year old sisters loves using Word to write something on the screen and and see how good it is at predicting what she actually meant, half the time we don't even know though so the pda has no chance. I've had no problems using any of the different transcriber methods, you can either use the onscreen keyboard, or use your own handwriting, bearing in mind you need to write quite clearly in order for it to be understood and transribed correctly. You can even use the pen to draw an image in word! ( Can you tell I'm easily amused?)
As a student I'm finding the voice recorder quite a useful application for my dissertation, eurgh interviews! Not bad for a PDA though, picks up background noise but not as badly as you would think for something this cheap. There's a couple of games and they're easy to play using the pen as a mouse.
I've had a few problems using this USB cable to share things from my computer to the PDA have had it over 2 months now and still haven't managed to work it out and I'm doing an IT course so I'm not exactly un educated on these things. No idea what its capable of doing but I have a feeling it may be to put music, images etc onto your PDA, oh well!
Anyway, coming to the end of this review now sorry about the length. The cradle fits perfectly onto the window and the N35 fits perfectly into the cradle, no problems with the connector although I have read bad reviews about the fit. Personally not had a problem, but based on others opinions I would recommend being gentle. Same with the stylus pen, I nearly bought a second hand version with half the stylus broken off because it is quite a snug fit at first, to say the least. Ladies with nails like me, after use do not push it right back down into its place you'll never get it back out again! Antenna is the same, quite stiff first few times you use it but fine now.
As a cheap Sat Nav, fine no extra features though even though some descriptions lead you to believe this. Hope this helps!
