First Impressions were good its looks nice with a good standard of design. The screen is bright with a 1280x800 wide xga resolution it has good contrast both under the fluorescent lights at work and sat outside at the local coffee shop.

Software support wasn’t great, it came preinstalled with Windows XP home the only bundled applications were Acers management software, cd/dvd authoring software (for use with the DVD +- RW drive. Also bundled was a copy of Powerdvd for watching movies. There was no office software, which cause a little problem. I solved this by downloading a copy of open office.
The laptop is powered by a Intel Centrino. The processor is a 1.5ghz Celeron with inbuilt wireless and Intel’s power management which gives you a reasonable runtime on battery (I must admit I rarely use battery so I haven’t done extensive tests on life). The wireless performance is good Windows detected all points at work home and eclipse wireless (re branded bt openworld) at the local coffee house.
One disappointment was while a great desktop computer applications open fast and with 512MB memory and 60 GB disk its more than adequate for the average user. However my model shipped with the inclusion of Intel’s mobile 'extreme' graphics chip. The only extreme thing about it that is extremely poor; performance on 3D games or CAD apps is very poor. If you want to play games or run cad apps don’t buy this laptop.
Ports wise it has usb, firewire, svideo and dsub for video output. I tried outputting a film to my tv output was ok but as usual Intels terrible integrated graphics has a terrible driver which makes tv settings difficult.
Overall a really nice if Spartan laptop, if you want a cheap unit that looks nice and can handle office functions and Internet browsing with ease the Travemate is a good choice.

Advantages: Fast, good graphic, thin Disadvantages: low quality sound&screen, mal placement of ports
...me question the logic of Acer manufacturing this unit is the placement of the ports. There are two USB 2.0 ports on the right side, and one on the front. This is not a good idea since the adapter simply has to be somewhere where it keeps being in the way for me while working. The worst placement though is that of the audioconnections on the front. Unless you have small walkman headphones the wire keeps being in the way; and this has actually led ... ...connector finally has been bent.
I would still consider buying this laptop since it (and newer versions) will give you the best performance for the money; so if you need the speed whilst working consider paying the extra 100£ to get a centrino proccessor and be ready to sacrifice the multimedia settings this is the laptop to get!!! ...

Advantages: none Disadvantages: bad customer service, bad product, low reliability
I feel the urgent moral obligation to share my experiences with this laptop. As a scientist, I am using laptops for more than 10 years, i.e. since 1995, and this is defenitely the worst species I have ever had. It returned to the factory 4 times ladies and gentlemen, and do you think they drew a lesson from it? Nope! When I bought the laptop, it simply did not work, returned it to the shop, sent it back, received it one month later, ..., no result ... ...to the factory, received it back half a month later ... OK it worked for one year. Then, new severe hardware problems arised. Back to the shop, sent it back ... half a month later got it back ... worked ... for about 2 weeks. Today it is broken again and I will sent it back tomorrow. Somehow, I have the impression that this model is doomed to malfunction. In the shop they said that 90% of these models have been returned yet. This is my final verdict ...

Advantages: thin, cheap, fast, works for a lifetime Disadvantages: cant find any! except from the paint which fades
...up time.. i find my acer 4000 robust and reliable. i have it for like 15 months never had a problem with it never called Acer nor had it repaired. This laptop made me an Acer Maniac.. the only thing i hope was better was the sound but it still looks and works good. its thin, lightweight and its battery after a year + works with good settings for over 2 hours. the only thing that turn me sick :) is that the paint where i put my hands on below the ... ...i think this is something common in several other laptops and electronics in general. all in all i vote this one to be one of the most valuable electronics in the market ... hope this review was helpful.
P.S : although i own this one the above text is purely considered to be 100% fair and square i just know that this laptop is a hell of a deal for the money it worths! ...
