Manufacturer's product description
Recent developments in laser pickup and signal error correction technology have made it possible for the DVD-116 to transfer data from DVDs at the surprising speed of 21.6 MB/s or 16 times the standard DVD transfer rate without sacrificing its high reliability. In addition, this model is capable of reading CD-ROM data at 6.0 MB/s or 40 times the standard rate. The DVD-116's overall performance is enhanced by its ability to rapidly access specific data areas. When DVD-ROM discs are read, the average random access time is just 95 ms. And when scanning CD-ROM discs with their lower data storage density, the access speed is further improved to 80 ms.

Advantages: Good wifi Disadvantages: Terrible dvd/cd burner which will fail after a few uses. Fan will fail too
...The Acer Travelmate series, particularly the 36xx range (ie 36829 with M processor is probably the worst computer on the market. After less than 10 DVD burns, the DVD burner failed. After around 2 months the cd/dvddrive stoped working completely (reading as well as writing disks). After 18 months (today) the fan is making horrible noises, and will need to be replaced. The battery life is less than 2 hours. Furthermore, and this is very important, customer support from ACER itself is zero. I ordered a 'rescue disk' by phone (none was included in the package), priced at 50 euros. It was sent recorded delivery, cash on delivery. It never arrived because they did not bother to send it. A terrible computer. A terrible company....

Advantages: Cheap for the specification, looks good Disadvantages: Keyboard feels cheap and speakers not very powerful.
...Remember this is a budget computer at a budget price. This is a good computer for general use although it will need a graphic card upgrade to play newer games. The keyboard feels cheap although adequate, but the speakers are not very good. All the accessories do colour match the system.
For the price the computer is well specified. It starts with an AMD Sempron 2800+ processor, 256MB DDR SDRAM, 40GD Hard Disk drive, DVDROMDrive and a 56k Modem. There is also a built in card reader supporting the following card formats: CompactFlash Card type I, CompactFlash Card type II, Memory Stick PRO, MultiMediaCard, SD Memory Card, SmartMedia Card.
The computer also has a modem, on board sound and graphics. There are 6 Hi-Speed USB ports, PS2 keyboard and mouse ports, Ethernet 10 Base-T/100 Base-TX network port, Parallel printer port, 9 pin...

We bought this before a recent weekend away in Rome (ok, I confess, we went to watch the rugby!) As we thought it would be nice to know a little about what we were looking at and where we were.
I spent the delay at the airport and the flight checking... more
