Last year I saw a young male colleague using a handheld device at work. He carried it for every meeting or discussion. (I have nothing against males or young people, this is an observation). I asked him what it was? He said it was a PDA and with this contraption he does not need a diary, pen or paper, it takes care of everything. I was quite fascinated and that evening, I got on to the net to find out what PDA meant. Personal Digital Assistants (or PDAs) were supposed to be great liberators, organising the disorganised, freeing the deskbound and even entertaining! What more could you ask for, I decided to go for one.
I did my search on Kelkoo, Dealtime and other sites trying to find a good deal. It was hard for me to decide which was one good value for money, as I did not know what the features meant or in other words what I was looking for! I jotted down a few model numbers. As there were too many brand names my list did not go beyond A-D! I made a trip to the local Comet and PC World stores to have a look. The sales person was helpful, but I could see him getting frustrated at my ignorance and questioned what I intended to do with it. He became more obliging when I said I was ready to buy on the same day. We finally decided on an Acer model (S60) which had a lot of features, very close to what I wanted ( or said so at that time !) and was offered at a good deal. I turned to my husband to seek his opinion. He said in his usual supportive voice - take the one you like! We paid £210 for this PDA + accesories as leather case, USB Sync-charge cable, earphones, AC adapter etc. It is cheaper to buy now and can be purchased at £175 online.
I do not want to get into details of specs- you could read them at Acer site. But I would like to say this is very light (145g) and was convenient to use. The instructions were easy to follow and install on to the PC. I started using it right away and my children even nicknamed me 'mother -tech! I took it to work and struggled with it. But the voice recording is an easy way of recording your own creative ideas. I liked the features -as playing games, listen to music (MP3 playback).
The preloaded software on Palm applications help you to get rid of paper diary and use this as an address book, calculater, date book, mail, memo pad and 'work to do' list. The PDA had supplementary applications as Audio box, photowiz, clock (different time around the world) filer, recorder, service launcher and walk reader. I have not used the last 4 functions yet! The memory is quite good 33 MHz. The PDA has 2 years collect and return warranty and 1 year International travellers warranty. After a few weeks of use I found it difficult to transfer data everyday to and from computer (Hot Sync function). This PDA is now more of a game to my 10 year old son. I am back to my diary!
If you are considering buying one just remember they are not for everyone. PDA has to be a planned purchase and not an impulse buy like I did! They need to be used solely and regularly and not in addition to your paper diary! You have to throw away your scrap paper lists and Post its!
You have to organise yourself before this electronic organiser can help you! Good luck!

The acer s60 has infrared which is found in most PDA’s and is used to ‘beam’ information to other devices. It also has photowiz a program that enables you to apply certain effects to photos on memory sticks. It has 6 pictures in it’s memory. ... ...to install them from the acer s60 CD ROM. You can also install games and clock from the CD. There is a headphone socket to put in headphones specially designs for the acer s60.You can transfer pictures from the memory stick to the internal memory but only certain formats. it also has a hold switch, it disables all keys which stops the PDA from being turned on in your pocket.
