A Hemingway Classic

Advantages: A classic novel
Disadvantages: None

? and ?Oh I say..? type phrases, this is a brilliantly crafted novel. Hemingway writes in a sparse style and allows his characters to speak for themselves, showing rather than telling the reader. Whilst the characters might not sound terribly sympathetic your opinion of them changes as you read, and you also have to take into account that this is set in the aftermath of the First World War and there?s an air of general malaise anyway. However, the themes overall are timeless ? the search for happiness and meaning, the problems of love, and what?s life all about. As one character comments to Jake, ?Don?t you ever get the feeling that all your life is going by and you?re not taking advantage of it? Do you realize you?ve lived nearly half the time you have to live already??. This was Hemingway?s first really ?big? novel, published in 1926 ...

Review of Fiesta - Ernest Hemingway

Hemingway's best; clear, concise, enthrawling.

Advantages: Everything that is good about Hemingway. Very enjoyable. Anyone can (and should!) read this book.
Disadvantages: Perhaps not typical of Hemingway's work, but I can't name any.

This is my favourite Hemingway novel, and infact, one of my favourite books full stop. I am therefore, somewhat surprised that this has not (to date) received more positive reviews. For me, this is a clear 5 stars. In usual Hemingway style, this is not superfluous in any way, although it is longer than most of his other publications; I don't think there's a single word that is in excess. Robert Jordan's adventure is told in the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War, resulting in an insightful as well as enjoyable reading experience. The feeling of the inevitable end to this characters story, as suggested by the title, haunts the reader throughout and is utilised in the building of suspense and tension. This is in all respects, an excellent novel, thoroughly enjoyable, intriguing and insightful. Once you get into it, chances are you ...

Review of For Whom The Bell Tolls - Ernest Hemingway

An uneven book. Not the best Hemingway Novel.

Advantages: Some great, precise writing. Unmatched portrayal of reality. It almost feels like non-fiction
Disadvantages: A sometimes dull plot. Obscure allusions. Wordy and diffuse language for Hemingway.

have joined the Loyalist's fight against the Fascists, is to blow up a bridge during a key attack by the Republic. Jordan employs the help of a band of renegades who live in the mountains and are loyal to the republic to blow the bridge. The band provides the story with some of its most colorful and interesting characters: Pablo, the leader, who has lost his courage; Pilar, Pablo's wife, a fierce, respected woman with an ugly and square-shaped face; and the beautiful Maria, the recipient of unmitigated figurative scars during the war. The plot is as simple as I've explained it above; a soldier and a band are trying to blow up bridge. This is both a weaknesses and strength of the novel. The lack of little forward momentum allows Hemingway to delve deeper into the thoughts of several characters, especially the main character, Robert ...
