I have tried Actal for years as I have got a stomach ulcer. It is due to a damaged part of the stomach lining, and the strong stomach acid attacks it causing a sharp pain. Scientists have discovered that it is also due to a bacteria - helicobacter. But I wouldn't go into that.
Despite of its rather unpleasant, chalky taste, Actal is extremely good at relieving heartburn. One tablet is usually enough - it neutralises your stomcach acid and is a very fastantacid. I espeically like it because it is in small tablet forms and are easier to carry. As far as I know, it has no side effects at all.
However, the most effective antacid, I think, is Gavascon liquid. It is more pleasant tasting and also works faster due to its liquid state. I wouldn;t recommend the tablet form though - stick to Actal if you prefer the convenience of tablets.
Some useful tips for decreasing heart burn pain:
Drink milk Drink warm water DO NOT GET STRESSED! (if possible) This is very important - wear lose and warm clothing - NO JEANS!! they would meremy increase the pain. Eat - a filling and nuritious diet. Hunger could also cause heart burns. Take a rest.
Very interesting, we've tried milk etc but no medicine at the moment, will give it a try as susan is pregnant and has quite bad heart burn. is it okay to take during pregnancy?
