Patrick McGoohan's 'Dangerman' was really the template for 'The Prisoner'. In 'Dangerman', McGoohan played a secret agent, John Drake, and the No. 6 character in 'The Prisoner' could be seen as a natural continuation of Drake's character.
'The Prisoner' was right for its time (the '60s), in an era of social unrest and dissatisfaction in the Western World. That said it has a timeless quality, encouraging us to think for ourselves. A succession of ... ...of McGoohan's No. 6.
The best episode is probably when the tables are turned, in 'Hammer Into Anvil, on a blubbering No. 2, Patrick Cargill, who is worn down by No.6's sheer refusal to be dominated.
In 'The General' No. 6 wrecks a computer by asking it the most subversive word in the English language, "Why?" In 'Schizoid Man', No. 6 even forces his double to give in!
