Manufacturer's product description
The Adaptec ATA RAID 1200A card delivers data protection and increased performance to individuals and companies operating ATA drives for workstations, entry-level servers, and rackmount server environments. The Adaptec ATA RAID 1200A supports up to 4 drives. Its low-profile form factor makes it ideal for ISP environments - offering maximum space for other server components, and allowing for increased airflow. Its performance is just as remarkable in traditional pedestal server environments. Striping two or more drives provides significant disk performance increases. This is especially valuable when running data-intensive applications such as video/audio streaming and post-production, image editing, and the most sophisticated gaming applications. A user-friendly management GUI also provides instant access to all your storage management needs.

...recommend upgrading to current firmware and 2.16 storcon utl (both are on www.intel.com. There is a linux version of the 2.16 storcon, but it was hard to find!)
With initial installation on a Gigabyte GA7 motherboard and Adaptec 2940AU SCSI controller, the problems with onboard intel BIOS / adaptec 2940AU and mobo BIOS reared it's ugly head.
I could not for the life of me with all the PCI juggling, IRQ remapping and BIOS remapping options get it to boot with a Adaptec SCSI card and Intel RAID card. I asked a friend about his setup, and he had no problems (he was running a Intel serverboard with his SRCS14L)
My problem was solved by removing SCSI from system completely and migrating to IDE bootup drives (which was such a pain on linux!)
Current drivers are 2.05 which are included since the 2.4.19 kernel.
As with all RAID controllers...

Advantages: Cheap and fast spindle speed Disadvantages: More space
...So you have SATA and need a drive? This drive maybe for you, especially if you are looking at RAID in the future. These drives are now below £40 so three or four in RAID will give you the speed of a WD Raptor for less than the price of one!! The SATA gives you 150MB/S whereas normal Parallel ATA is way below that, also you will be able to feel the difference as the computer runs a lot faster as you have reduced one of the serious sub-system bottlenecks. It is fairly quiet and runs at 7200RPM spindle speed. However if you are looking for space and not speed I would suggest a 200GB or 300GB.
Not great for space, but possibly the best bang-for-buck if you are looking at RAID or speed.

...The Gigabyte GA-8ANXP-D is the best motherboard out there in the market today, it also has a lot of package including DPS, and a Wireless LAN card. I buy this mobo for my new Prescott 2.8 GHZ hoping that this will be the most suitable partner for my processor. The motherboard includes 4 Serial ATA cables for use with either the native ICH6 supported connections, or those provided by the additional Silicon Image SATA RAID controller.
The package also includes a single IDE cable, single floppy cable with a color gray, There are 9 USB 2.0 ports which supports IEE1394 devices. You will never run out of USB ports with this motherboard. The installation guide is quick and easy to follow especially for those novice users including me. This motherboard really has a product manual and documentation. The only bad thing that I can say about...

OVERVIEW AND DESIGN
Well, well. I must admit, at first when i was looking at MP3 players, it was one of two manufacturer choices for me. Either Samsung, or the mightly, (faulty) Apple iPod. I wanted four particular things: an attractive design, long... more
