Manufacturer's product description
By installing the AVA-2906 in your PC, you can connect up to seven SCSI peripherals to your PC and they will each run up to six times faster than they would if you connected them through your parallel port. Plus, installation is simple. Just remove the case from you desktop PC, slide the AVA-2906 into a PCI expansion slot, and then connect your internal and external SCSI peripherals. The included EZ-SCSI Standard Edition software takes you step-by-step through the installation process and automatically installs peripheral drivers. This card is ideal for connecting SCSI-1, SCSI-2, and Fast SCSI Zip drives, scanners, tape, and CD-ROM drives. Its Fast SCSI-2 interface supports data transfer rates of up to 10MB per second. It has a DB25-pin female external connector and a 50-pin standard male internal connector. Adaptec tests its SCSI cards with hundreds of computer systems and peripherals to ensure the widest possible support.
Advantages: A bargain. Easy to install and used. Good entry level SCSI controller. Disadvantages: No support for higher data rates.
...of storage you can string together a bunch of old SCSI hard drives and end up with a reasonable amount of storage that isn’t too slow and will function reliably.
So in summary SCSI moves data faster, you can connect a lot of devices, it is more reliable but it does cost a bit more.
This brings me to Adaptec’s AVA two thousand nine hundred series. I personally am the proud owner of an AVA – 2904. Adaptec seem to increment the numbers (for example, I have seen a 2906 about) but I think this represents minor improvements to the series or cards intended for different markets. First, the good news this card is cheap. I bought mine for only £30, ideal as I am short of cash right now and I only wanted it to run an elderly SCSI cd writer at home. It also installed perfectly, I popped in the new card restarted my PC, it came back...

Advantages: Works well out of box; captures video as MPEG-2 flawlessly Disadvantages: Stopped working after a Microsoft update - Adaptec will not offer free fix.
...Product served me well for transferring several piles of VHS tapes to my Media Center 2005 machine. Then - Microsoft came out with some software update and product only works for a limited time. Pause it while recording and the PC freezes. restart the PC and it no longer detects the device. Remove device - uninstall drivers and uninstalling WinDVR 3 all temporary fixes - problem reoccurs. Doing the C++ registry hack worked very limited, now does not. Adaptec - with this known problem - can not even be contacted outside of their "pay" support. Adaptec has not updated their searchable database with the "fix" - they apparently demand their customers to pay them before they assist. A sad state of affairs within a once-great company. Shame on you, Adaptec!...

Advantages: Gigantic storage capacity, long shelf life for stored disks Disadvantages: Not cheap, bit slow sometimes.
...The Panasonic LF-D201 is a SCSI DVD-RAM drive. Mmmm, I hear you say, what a bunch of lovely acronyms, if only I knew what they meant I might actually bother to read this article. Never fear all will be explained.
SCSI is the way in which it connects to your computer, for the pros and cons of this method, e.g. compared to USB, see my opinion on Adaptec’s AVA-2904 SCSI controller card and to a lesser extent my opinion on the Plextor 12/10/32S SCSI cd writer.
DVD-RAM is probably going to be the replacement for cd writers. It has an enormous capacity per DVD disk (up to 9.4 GB) and prices are starting to make it accessible to the likes of you and I. I have also discussed DVD-RAM and its pros and cons more extensively in my opinion on the older Panasonic LF-D103.
Having covered the basics in earlier opinions, I can now (thankfully...
