The Adaptec Duo64 network interface card (NIC) maximizes the performance of PCI servers operating on Fast Ethernet and Ethernet networks. For applications requiring maximum throughput, such as graphics, multimedia, database, and mission-critical, this NIC increases the performance of 64-bit and 32-bit PCI-based servers. Based on Adaptec's innovative DuraLAN technology, the unique NIC controller on the Duo64 provides increased bandwidth for even the most demanding networks. With full-duplex support, the Duo64 achieves a maximum throughput of 400 Mbps. This NIC can be used in conjunction with other Adaptec NICs to increase flexibility, performance, and cabling compatibility, and provides an easy migration path from Ethernet to Fast Ethernet.
Software / system requirements
OS Required: Microsoft Windows NT 3.51 or later, Microsoft Windows 95/98, Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional , Novell NetWare 4.0 or later, Microsoft Windows XP
Advantages: Fast clock speed / Good amount of lvl2 cache Disadvantages: Could balance out workload onto both cores a bit more
...This processor is a fairly mid-high spec for core 2 duo range it delivers some great performance for a good price.
This cpu can handle a lot of multi-tasking along with playing powerful games. Usually i can run a defragmentation and notice it hardly at all i can play games and play music with no problem it just makes desktop computing so easy.
As you may know this is an Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 / 2.66ghz cpu, It has 2 cores on the one chip. it runs with 64-bit architecture which then opens up a whole new world of 64-bit operating systems for tommorows technolodgy...this along with the fact it has 4mb lvl2 cache makes superfast repsonse rates to programs and files i have also noticed that their are not so many "cache misses" to which i expected so this pleases me the most :D
The only downside is that i have noticed that core utilization...

Advantages: online capacity expansion, deals with hard disc problems better Disadvantages: slow compared to software RAID
...Dead cheap raid 5 card compared to similar others (£50 cheaper). It also allows online capacity upgrades, which basically means you can expand the size of the RAID without destroying the data on the RAID. handy!
The main reason for me getting a RAID 5 hardware solution rather than a software solution again, is the fact that even if one of the hard discs on a software RAID5 becomes slightly iffy, it drops it, and you have to rebuild!!! With hardware RAID5, it'll automatically recover, and will rebuild in the background.
This fits into my PCI-33 slot, but can alos connect to a PCI64. mmmm tasty... It has LEDs on the card for RAID access, CRC, and Drive access (4 LEDS) and it has all the necessary connectors for external LEDS too! I nearly creamed myself with the thought of 6 blue LEDS connected externally to the RAID card.
I would...

Advantages: Speed, 5 year warrenty Disadvantages: Low capacity considering price
....
These controller cards typically come in PCI (32 bit) or PCI-X (64 bit) flavours. Some have the ability to be installed in either slots, but this will vary depending on the controller card purchased.
An Adaptec 29160N works well with these drives and can be picked up second hand for around £30. For a good source on information regarding SCSI controller cards, vist Adaptecs website at www.adaptec.com. You may also need to consider a drive cooler as well, as these drives run hot due to their high rotational speeds.
However, in my opinion this additional cost is well worth it. Whatever type of work you currently perform on you PC, it will boot faster, open applications quicker and generally feel more responsive. And if your system is still not fast enough, you can buy 2 or 3 drives, a RAID card and configure them as a stripped set which will give...
