Manufacturer's product description

Designed to be the most economical in a DAS environment, the Adaptec DuraStor 6220SS External Storage RAID Subsystem is a fast, flexible, scalable, easy-to-manage solution for SCSI-to-SCSI centralized data storage. Best suited for companies that place the highest priority on security, and where fewer than three servers share data. This is the optimal solution for distances less than 25 meters, and where a few RAID storage enclosures will meet the storage requirement. A superior alternative when compared with a PCI RAID solution, this external storage subsystem offers greater data protection and scalability. Enhanced performance is achieved through the off-loading of information from the server CPU to the external RAID Controller. This CPU utilization improves redundancy, promotes longer drive life, as well as frees up a PCI slot. The DuraStor 6220SS is configured using a 1U RAID appliance (Adaptec DuraStor 6200SR RAID Appliance) and SCSI-to-SCSI RAID controller with a 2U SCSI (LVD) drive enclosure (Adaptec DuraStor 312R Storage Enclosure), both with hot-swappable power supplies and cooling fan module. With the installation of a second RAID controller host-independent active-active failover/failback features are achieved. Highly fault-tolerant and easily scalable to three drive enclosures, the DuraStor 6220SS can store up to 2.7 TBytes of data using 73 GByte drives. The DuraStor 6200S RAID appliance may be deployed without the storage array providing external RAID benefits to existing JBOD environments maximizing current legacy storage investments.

Cheap RAID card is perfect! (but slow)
Review of Intel RAID Controller SRCS14L by waga

Advantages: online capacity expansion, deals with hard disc problems better
Disadvantages: slow compared to software RAID

...recommend upgrading to current firmware and 2.16 storcon utl (both are on www.intel.com. There is a linux version of the 2.16 storcon, but it was hard to find!) With initial installation on a Gigabyte GA7 motherboard and Adaptec 2940AU SCSI controller, the problems with onboard intel BIOS / adaptec 2940AU and mobo BIOS reared it's ugly head. I could not for the life of me with all the PCI juggling, IRQ remapping and BIOS remapping options get it to boot with a Adaptec SCSI card and Intel RAID card. I asked a friend about his setup, and he had no problems (he was running a Intel serverboard with his SRCS14L) My problem was solved by removing SCSI from system completely and migrating to IDE bootup drives (which was such a pain on linux!) Current drivers are 2.05 which are included since the 2.4.19 kernel. As with all RAID controllers... Read review

One of the fastest hard disk drives available
Review of Seagate Cheetah 15K.4 36.7 GB by sbarwell

Advantages: Speed, 5 year warrenty
Disadvantages: Low capacity considering price

...This hard disk drive is designed to be used in a high-end server solutions where both speed and reliability are paramount. The largest bottleneck in any computer system is the hard disk drive. And as solid state technology is out of the price range of most PC enthusiasts, the next best thing (after adding more RAM) is to upgrade the hard disk drive. The Seagate 15,000 RPM Cheetah is currently the fastest hard disk drive on the market. This drive is seriously fast and very reliable, hence the 5 year warranty from Seagate. I can vouch for this warranty from experience. Unless the drive has been physically abused, Seagate will replace it. The only downside to purchasing this hard disk drive is that you will need to purchase a SCSI controller card and cable in order for your new drive to get friendly with your current system... Scuzzy wuzzy, lets get buzzy
Review of Adaptec AVA 2904 by shearerm

Advantages: A bargain. Easy to install and used. Good entry level SCSI controller.
Disadvantages: No support for higher data rates.

...of my first ever submission to Ciao) all of which require a SCSI controller in order to connect them to your PC! So as well as discussing Adaptec’s excellent card I will also try and give a simple introduction to SCSI what it is, its pros and cons and why you might want to use it. A SCSI card is possibly one of the least sexy devices you can plug into your PC. However, it is one of your more useful options as installing it opens up a huge range of possibilities. SCSI stands for "Small Computer System Interface" and is pronounced "scuzzy" and is a system for connecting things to your pc, things like hard drives, scanners and cd writers, devices that need to be able to shift hefty amounts of data about quickly. A while back SCSI walked all over IDE in terms of performance but cost a packet. Not only were SCSI devices vastly more... Read review
