The Adaptec DuraStor 7220SS Storage Subsystem is a fast, flexible, quickly scalable, easy-to-manage solution for FC-to-SCSI networked data storage. The Durastor 7220SS is SAN ready, providing the highest performance, and the greatest amount of accessibility for multiple clients. Best suited for environments where shared storage is paramount, over long distances, thus requiring high connectivity. This subsystem is the optimal solution for shared storage environments, where multiple storage subsystems will be managed. The DuraStor 7220SS also offers other advantages, such as the ability to support LAN-free backups - particularly desirable where LAN bandwidth is constrained. It is ideal for small to large IT data centers and businesses with SANs or using Point-to- Point topologies to handle storage needs for data-intensive applications, such as e-commerce, rich media streaming, transaction processing, and data warehousing. The DuraStor 7220SS includes a 1U RAID appliance with a single FC-to-SCSI RAID controller and a 2U SCSI drive enclosure (Adaptec DuraStor 312R Storage Enclosure), both with hot-swappable power supplies and fans. Adding a second (optional) RAID controller provides host-independent active-active failover/failback features for point-to-point and arbitrated loop configurations. RAID level sup-port includes 0, 1, 0/1, 3, 4, 5, 0/5, and just a bunch of volume sets. Highly fault-tolerant and easily scalable to four drive enclosures, the DuraStor 7220SS can store up to 3.5 TBytes of data using 73 GByte drives.

...recommend upgrading to current firmware and 2.16 storcon utl (both are on www.intel.com. There is a linux version of the 2.16 storcon, but it was hard to find!)
With initial installation on a Gigabyte GA7 motherboard and Adaptec 2940AU SCSI controller, the problems with onboard intel BIOS / adaptec 2940AU and mobo BIOS reared it's ugly head.
I could not for the life of me with all the PCI juggling, IRQ remapping and BIOS remapping options get it to boot with a Adaptec SCSI card and Intel RAID card. I asked a friend about his setup, and he had no problems (he was running a Intel serverboard with his SRCS14L)
My problem was solved by removing SCSI from system completely and migrating to IDE bootup drives (which was such a pain on linux!)
Current drivers are 2.05 which are included since the 2.4.19 kernel.
As with all RAID controllers...

Advantages: Speed, 5 year warrenty Disadvantages: Low capacity considering price
...This hard disk drive is designed to be used in a high-end server solutions where both speed and reliability are paramount.
The largest bottleneck in any computer system is the hard disk drive. And as solid state technology is out of the price range of most PC enthusiasts, the next best thing (after adding more RAM) is to upgrade the hard disk drive.
The Seagate 15,000 RPM Cheetah is currently the fastest hard disk drive on the market. This drive is seriously fast and very reliable, hence the 5 year warranty from Seagate. I can vouch for this warranty from experience. Unless the drive has been physically abused, Seagate will replace it.
The only downside to purchasing this hard disk drive is that you will need to purchase a SCSI controller card and cable in order for your new drive to get friendly with your current system...

Advantages: A bargain. Easy to install and used. Good entry level SCSI controller. Disadvantages: No support for higher data rates.
...of my first ever submission to Ciao) all of which require a SCSI controller in order to connect them to your PC! So as well as discussing Adaptec’s excellent card I will also try and give a simple introduction to SCSI what it is, its pros and cons and why you might want to use it.
A SCSI card is possibly one of the least sexy devices you can plug into your PC. However, it is one of your more useful options as installing it opens up a huge range of possibilities. SCSI stands for "Small Computer System Interface" and is pronounced "scuzzy" and is a system for connecting things to your pc, things like harddrives, scanners and cd writers, devices that need to be able to shift hefty amounts of data about quickly. A while back SCSI walked all over IDE in terms of performance but cost a packet. Not only were SCSI devices vastly more...

This hard drive is very similar in look and feel to the other Passport versions that Western Digital has, in particular the Book with a glowing yellow circle that is very nice to look at and quite heavy to boot.
