Manufacturer's product description
The Adaptec AFC-9210LP is a low-profile, 2 Gigabit Fiber Channel host bus adapter (HBA) providing the highest performance I/O connectivity available. The AFC-9210LP offers full duplex data transfer capabilities (up to 400 MB/sec), provides Fiber Channel class 2 and class 3 support, and allows auto speed negotiation between 1Gb and 2Gb, all in a low-profile MD2 form factor HBA. The AFC-9210LP also has a 64-bit 66MHz universal PCI interface and is fully backward compatible with 32-bit, 33MHz PCI. A truly dynamic component of any Fiber Channel SAN solution, the AFC-9210LP supports Fiber Channel Arbitrated Loop, Point-to-Point, and Switched Fabric topologies. The AFC-9210LP delivers on Adaptec's promise of ease of use with easy configuration, quick system setup, and hot pluggable hard drives. The ability to add and remove drives on the fly allows for simple and reliable maintenance and SAN scalability. To best meet the high performance, interoperability and reliability requirements of the SAN industry, the AFC-9210LP is based on Agilent Technologies' industry leading "Tachyon" silicon, the most widely deployed Fiber Channel controller IC. This architecture enables performance to scale proportionately to the system CPU resources available and avoids bottlenecks associated with embedded processor-based HBAs. The result is minimal latency coupled with the ability to provide maximum I/O data transfer rates and bandwidth. The AFC-9210LP is the highest performance Fiber Card on the market, embracing the full potential of Fiber Channel. Adaptec recognizes the importance of rackable storage facilities and the AFC-9210LP's low-profile design makes it ideal for rackmount, pedestal, or mixed server environments. The AFC-9210LP is sold with a low-profile bracket mounted on the HBA, but also includes a standard-height bracket for complete flexibility of deployment. The brackets are easily interchangeable and are a convenient way to support a variety of storage configurations. Like all Adaptec products, AFC-9210LP has been rigorously tested in a variety of SAN configurations with a wide range of Fiber Channel components to deliver the utmost in interoperability, performance, and reliability now and in the future.
Advantages: A bargain. Easy to install and used. Good entry level SCSI controller. Disadvantages: No support for higher data rates.
...If you plug an SCSI card into your pc, don’t hold your breath because nothing exciting is going to happen. (Unless of course you have made a very bad job of installing the card. Then you might see smoke and flames coming from your cherished/reviled PC or even, in extreme cases, find yourself moving down a tunnel towards a bright light.) However, once you have installed you SCSI card you will be able to attach any number of exciting devices to your pc.
Although this is an opinion of Adaptecs AVA-2900 series of SCSI card, it is also a general review of SCSI. I have done this because as far as I can tell this is the first review at Ciao of a SCSI controller card. This seems to be a bit of an over sight to me as any number of SCSI devices have been reviewed, (such as the excellent Plextor external SCSI cd writer which was the subject...

Advantages: Plug n play, reliable, efficient Disadvantages: A bit pricy
...Finally, just when I was begining to give up on ever attaching my SCSI drive to my system, along came the answer to my prayers. A neat fitted in seconds, no need to open the case solution; the Adaptec USB to SCSI connector.
This piece of electronic genius allows you to connect virtually any SCSI device directly to your PC through its USB port. It works and is brilliant. It just plugs in and away it goes. Everything is supplied and with easy to follow directions.
It is not cheap though, expect to pay about $50 ($90) for it but compared with a SCSI card & cables it probably works out the same and is definately 100% less hastle than trying to configure an already stuffed full to the brim machine.
It's got my vote....

Advantages: The managability of Proliants is second to none Disadvantages: Accountants will try to make you buy cheaper
...with 4 Proc's and an additional 4 can be purchased. The server will take up to 64GB of 133MHz memory one of the excellent features is that the memory is raided and can be hot added to the server if you are running Windows 2003. The server also has 6 PCI-X hot plug expansion slots allowing Fibre Channel cards to attach to a SAN or additional Gigbit network cards. The server comes with 2 copper Gigabit NIC's on board, as said earlier additional NIC's can be added using the PCI expansion slots. For the internal disks the server has a built in smartarray 5i controller which allows you to have Raid1 or 5 using the 4 internal U3 disk slots. This top end server has all the redunacy features you would expect such as dual power and multiple fans all of which is hot pluggable to reduce server downtime.
