Manufacturer's product description
Choose an Adaptec Unified Serial controller to leverage cost-effective, high-capacity Serial ATA (SATA) disk drives or high-performance Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) drives, or both, in a single storage system. With Adaptec Unified Serial controllers, you can scale up to 60TB (using 500GB drives) and increase performance for SATA and SAS storage. Attach directly to SATA and SAS midplanes with up to 12 disk drives or increase capacity using SAS expanders. With an x8 lane, 800 MHz processing power and 256MB of memory, your large capacity solutions will maximize performance and scalability. The Adaptec RAID 31205 is a 12-port controller that supports SATA and SAS drives and next-generation PCIe connectivity. It features Adaptec RAID Code (ARC) with RAID levels 0, 1, 1E, 5, 5EE, 6, 10, 50, 60, JBOD, as well as Copyback Hot Spare and optional Snapshot Backup. The card has 256MB of DDR2 memory and a battery unit is optional. Adaptec Storage Manager provides one-view, centralized management for all Adaptec RAID controllers.

Advantages: online capacity expansion, deals with hard disc problems better Disadvantages: slow compared to software RAID
...recommend upgrading to current firmware and 2.16 storcon utl (both are on www.intel.com. There is a linux version of the 2.16 storcon, but it was hard to find!)
With initial installation on a Gigabyte GA7 motherboard and Adaptec 2940AU SCSI controller, the problems with onboard intel BIOS / adaptec 2940AU and mobo BIOS reared it's ugly head.
I could not for the life of me with all the PCI juggling, IRQ remapping and BIOS remapping options get it to boot with a Adaptec SCSI card and Intel RAID card. I asked a friend about his setup, and he had no problems (he was running a Intel serverboard with his SRCS14L)
My problem was solved by removing SCSI from system completely and migrating to IDE bootup drives (which was such a pain on linux!)
Current drivers are 2.05 which are included since the 2.4.19 kernel.
As with all RAID controllers...

Advantages: Works well out of box; captures video as MPEG-2 flawlessly Disadvantages: Stopped working after a Microsoft update - Adaptec will not offer free fix.
...Product served me well for transferring several piles of VHS tapes to my Media Center 2005 machine. Then - Microsoft came out with some software update and product only works for a limited time. Pause it while recording and the PC freezes. restart the PC and it no longer detects the device. Remove device - uninstall drivers and uninstalling WinDVR 3 all temporary fixes - problem reoccurs. Doing the C++ registry hack worked very limited, now does not. Adaptec - with this known problem - can not even be contacted outside of their "pay" support. Adaptec has not updated their searchable database with the "fix" - they apparently demand their customers to pay them before they assist. A sad state of affairs within a once-great company. Shame on you, Adaptec!...

Advantages: Portable Device,Good for small time duration capturing Disadvantages: To convert 30 minutes of captured video it takes around two hours
...It Captures the Video in real time mode but drops number of frames. So you donot get the smooth motion of a scene. Same result is observed in the video cd. The manufacturer has set the time limit for capturing to only 600 seconds. After that audio & video goes out of sync
The software(sonic My DVD is supplied with the unit is also not user friendly. It is very slow. One major drawback is in preview mode, the source sound gets muted. It becomes difficult to recognise the scene. In video editing mode, after trimming unwanted footege, the audio video synchronisation goes totally out.The resulting vcd projet has very poor quality with lot of pauses and choppy movements.Very Furstrating.other capture devices has got far better quality than this Adaptec AVC-1100....
