Advantages: A bargain. Easy to install and used. Good entry level SCSI controller. Disadvantages: No support for higher data rates.
...of storage you can string together a bunch of old SCSI hard drives and end up with a reasonable amount of storage that isn’t too slow and will function reliably.
So in summary SCSI moves data faster, you can connect a lot of devices, it is more reliable but it does cost a bit more.
This brings me to Adaptec’s AVA two thousand nine hundred series. I personally am the proud owner of an AVA – 2904. Adaptec seem to increment the numbers (for example, I have seen a 2906 about) but I think this represents minor improvements to the series or cards intended for different markets. First, the good news this card is cheap. I bought mine for only £30, ideal as I am short of cash right now and I only wanted it to run an elderly SCSI cd writer at home. It also installed perfectly, I popped in the new card restarted my PC, it came back...

Advantages: Works well out of box; captures video as MPEG-2 flawlessly Disadvantages: Stopped working after a Microsoft update - Adaptec will not offer free fix.
...Product served me well for transferring several piles of VHS tapes to my Media Center 2005 machine. Then - Microsoft came out with some software update and product only works for a limited time. Pause it while recording and the PC freezes. restart the PC and it no longer detects the device. Remove device - uninstall drivers and uninstalling WinDVR 3 all temporary fixes - problem reoccurs. Doing the C++ registry hack worked very limited, now does not. Adaptec - with this known problem - can not even be contacted outside of their "pay" support. Adaptec has not updated their searchable database with the "fix" - they apparently demand their customers to pay them before they assist. A sad state of affairs within a once-great company. Shame on you, Adaptec!...

Advantages: Pro: Slinky, power-packed server for cramped datacentres. Disadvantages: Con: No 64-bit PCI slots, not enough PCI expansion slots.
...drives, a slower bus and older 500MHz Pentium III processors.
Inside the casing everything looks easy to swap out. The top covers fold out to allow easy access to the interior. The two redundant hot-plug power supplies are a doddle to pull out quickly if needed. The hard drives are hot-swappable too, but a metal lock will stop anyone pulling out a disk drive accidentally. The chassis weighs in at 22.7kg and has a 2U rack height with a depth of 66.6cm, this is important for IT managers looking to pack as much processing power and storage space in a cramped datacentre or server room.
The memory modules could prove finicky to remove if you have big fingers and cabling got in the way when trying to take out the fan. However, setting up the server was nice and quick with the minimum amount of fuss.
The PowerEdge 2450 is the first in its class...
