...to life (no smoke, no flames, no blue screen) and found the card and its attached writer instantly.
The bad news is that while SCSI is cable of up to 160 mb per second this card will only do 10 mb per second. If that does not mean much, to you then try to think of it in terms of floppy disk per second, the AVA 2704 can move the equivalent of just over seven full floppy disks of data in a second where as its big brothers can move the equivalent of just over 114 floppy disks worth in a second! However, this was not really an issue for me as I only trying en to attach one old SCSI cd writer. Still it would have been nice to have the option! My only other gripe would be the lack of software bundled with it. Adaptec are supposed to have some excellent software for working with SCSI, in this case it was notable by its absence. Although since a lot...

Advantages: Plug n play, reliable, efficient Disadvantages: A bit pricy
...Finally, just when I was begining to give up on ever attaching my SCSI drive to my system, along came the answer to my prayers. A neat fitted in seconds, no need to open the case solution; the Adaptec USB to SCSI connector.
This piece of electronic genius allows you to connect virtually any SCSI device directly to your PC through its USB port. It works and is brilliant. It just plugs in and away it goes. Everything is supplied and with easy to follow directions.
It is not cheap though, expect to pay about $50 ($90) for it but compared with a SCSI card & cables it probably works out the same and is definately 100% less hastle than trying to configure an already stuffed full to the brim machine.
It's got my vote....

...I can’t speak highly enough about Yamaha products as a whole, and their range of Re-Writers is no exception.
I bought a one of the 6416s series and it has been excellent. I chose the SCSI version and not the IDE because of problems I had heard about concerning the way IDE works in this area.
Having looked around extensively, I found a great deal at Insight. I bought the Re-writer and an Adaptec PCI SCSI card to connect it to my motherboard. SCSI is much quicker than IDE and when ‘burning’ a CD that is important. You should get all the software you need included.
Everything installed itself in Windows 98 and I was up and running within a ten minutes. It writes data and audio and around 1 megabyte per second without any problems. Yamaha units usually have at least 2 megabytes of buffer memory build in, so very few CD making sessions go...
