As Adobe Photoshop is widely looked upon as a standard tool for webdesigners, I thought that I would try out their rival to Dreamweaver, GoLive 5.0. First off I was impressed with the ease of installation, as once I had set the preferences for the browsers, it was ready to go, and just meant that I had to either create a new site or import an existing site.
The various toolbars have the Photoshop feel, so there was very little to get used to, and as such it was very easy to get going with. It also allows a more seamless integration of files from other Adobe applications (funny that!).
The site map provided when I imported my site was very easy to understand and there was an automatic link checking system. Indeed if you enter a page with a dead/faulty link for editting, then GoLive will actually highlight it for you so you know that editting is required.
The major advantage it has over Dreamweaver is the fact that there are in-built browser branching possibilities, so content can be marked as being browser specific, something that is not available with a default setup in Dreamweaver 3.
Unfortunately as GoLive has yet to really become an industry standard tool, there are not the same amount of plug-ins by third parties as with Dreamweaver. However the fact that you can see the tag hierarchy/nesting easily is very useful and very good if you are someone who likes to code pages manually and want to see what is wrong with them.
Having the luxury of both tools I use them side by side, although I think that Dreamweaver sneaks it by a hair's breadth although Adobe GoLive 5.0 is a truly exquisite application, and if you are already a frequent Adobe user then this is for you, especially if you work on multi-language versions of webpages.
