Having used InDesign since version 1, it is fare to say that with every release Adobe have improved and enhanced this product.
InDesign is a good competitor to the industry standard DTP package Quark, plus, thanks to CS2 and CS3, it is a good competitor to both Microsoft Publisher - and Word.
Primarily this is a publishing and design package, allowing you to create the layout for books, magazines, leaflets, etc. Not to mention CD/DVD covers, cases and inlays, plus calenders, certificates, brochures.
Bundled with Adobe Bridge, you have easy access to stock photography (excellent when you need a photo of a someone eating a cake) plus plenty of templates to get you going with you next design assignment.
The most predominant difference between CS2 and CS3 is the layout of the software.
The layout of the user interface is in-line with the rest of the CS 3 suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, etc...) and as such, some of the terminology of the panels and functions have changed slightly to make it consistent.
Infact, some dialogues and options are very obviously purposely shared between applications to make it even easier to transition between one application and another.
If you have been pondering about upgrading to CS3, it is worth it. If you have not used InDesign before, you will not find it complicated and you will have a brochure worthy of a 5-star hotel made, within minutes.
For anyone needing a professional application to make stunning publications, and without the usual clutter of options and tweaking, this really is the software for you.

Good review.
I like the way you've spaced it out... very reader friendly.
Though more detail would boost the rating.
Let me know if you edit and I'll be happy to reread.
