My Adobe Photo deluxe v 3. 1 came with my PC, so I didn’t choose it and I knew nothing about this type of software before buying my PC!
I have had some frustrating times when I have been working with photo’s or designing something with clipart and things have not worked out as I had hoped, and there is no-one to ask……. There is nothing quite like having to find out how the software works the hard way, and in my case it has definitely been the hard way.
Photo deluxe suits me fine, now that I have learned how to use it. I can alter the look of a photo, correct red eye, even repair a damaged photo. My stepfather asked me if I could do anything with an old photo of his mum, it was creased and scratched; I was able to really improve it using the Clone facility. This enabled me to go to a damaged area, select clone, then go to an area with the same colour and texture and just cover the damaged part up with a few clicks on the mouse. The result was very acceptable, and my stepfather had me make a couple of copies for other members of his family, as this was the only picture in existence of his mum when she was young.
I have had some fun too with the greetings card option. I bought some ready folded card from PC World in the sale, complete with envelopes. My first card was for my brother in law who was about to go on holiday to Australia, I customised it by selecting a greeting card template which I just dragged to the work area, altered the text to suit and added pictures of Oz to the front of the card (Sydney Harbour) and I added a picture of him and my sister to the inside.
Not to be outdone, he made a card for my hubby with his Adobe Photo deluxe, on the front was a picture of my hubby superimposed on a beach scene, complete with patch over one eye . The perfect pirate impersonation ;-)

As for business cards, it’s a doddle, just design what you want with your own fancy fonts and clipart or even a photo, and when you select the print option click on multiple, then click on paper type, select Avery and choose business cards. They will be printed off just the right size on whatever colour or quality card you desire. You can even do this with a single photo, and go through the same selection process for printing, and have 8 small photos.
It really is very flexible once you have taken the time to experiment, and as it’s not the very latest in graphic software, the price is very good at around £30 for the latest version V 4 Home edition.
It has taken the best part of a year to become familiar with the creative possibilities. Of course there are so many great graphic software packages on the market today, but unless you are into it in a big way, do not update your own software just for the sake of it, whichever brand you are using. If you do update, you have then got to learn about the software all over again, which seems a waste of time and energy.
During my time of frustration, I logged on to Adobe’s technical support site, and once I registered I was able to type in a question. I was pleasantly surprised to be presented with a long list of technical problems, which had been answered previously. I was then able to sort out my own problem with ease. If you have Adobe software and you ever have problems give this site a go at www.adobeforums.com
There is a chap who seems to answer all the technical questions, his name is Bob Hill, who presumably is employed by Adobe to put all of us right when we have a problem!
This must be the quickest update at Ciao, after reading Keiths comment!
I can scan straight into Photo deluxe and play about with the image, save it to GIF, TIF or JPEG if I want to, so I can send my pics over the web :-)
Advantages: Great for Image reduction, it's free in many cases, loads of useful editing options, good for home users. Disadvantages: Saving images takes too long, programme often locks up
Adobe Photodeluxe comes free with many scanning / printing packages, infact I think I have 3 copies of it kicking around somewhere. I think it's £20-30 to buy new. The programme doesn't take long to install and is fairly user friendly to get started. Also included is the excellent adobe acrobat reader.
Behind the programme is Adobe, who are becoming an increasingly large presence in the world of computing and as with microsoft, make every attempt ... ...to save it as an adobe photodeluxe image which may be ok for owners of it, but not for putting on the web or if you are sending it to someone who doesn't have the programme.
Also I find it tends to "lock up" quite often. Another downer is I don't find it easy to draw on top of the image or transpose an image on top of another.
Overall, pd3 is worth using and if you can afford to , upgrade to paint shop pro or similar.
Enjoy

Advantages: Can manipulate photos in hundreds of different ways. Disadvantages: None that i can think of, except it costs money to buy.
...and consider why I like Adobe PhotoDeluxe better than Paint Shop Pro. Paint Shop Pro is a very basic program. When manipulating photographs you can only do a variety of basic things such as blur or tile and a few other basic things. I am currently studying for my Art GCSE and I had to do a photo project. I wanted to use my digital camera but to make it look different I needed to manipulate photos. Paint Shop Pro allowed me to do the basic things ... ...out of the sides. With this new program I was able to remove the cable completely. This made the photo look much more professional.
There is a lot of competition in this market but when I consider Paint Shop Pro and Adobe PhotoDeluxe that definitely comes out on top. ...

Now turn those possibilities into reality using the compelling creativity tools of Adobe Photoshop software for Silicon Graphics. For both printed and on-line design tasks, Adobe Photoshop offers unlimited creative options. Start with a blank screen or scan an image directly into the program. Then create separate layers, much like transparent sheets of acetate, on which you can combine graphic elements, paint, and edit with-out changing the original background image. Add color, change it, or take it away. Import Adobe Illustrator files. Choose from more than 40 filters to generate dazzling special effects. And export all or part of an image to a variety of formats. For service bureaus and prepress professionals, Adobe Photoshop provides performance capabilities that rival dedicated, high-end prepress systems, at a fraction of the cost. Scan, correct, and separate continuous-tone images. View a CMYK soft proof of an image while in RGB mode. Perform on-screen color editing in CMYK mode. Easily preview out-of-gamut colors. Selectively replace colors and precisely adjust the amount of ink on a given color plate. And generate high-quality monotones, duotones, tritones, and quadtones. For engineers, technical illustrators, and industrial designers working with computer aided design (CAD) programs, Adobe Photoshop makes it possible to communicate ideas more clearly. Create or scan textures to map onto the 3D models you create in your CAD application. Build realistic environments around your models using Adobe Photoshop paint, color, and layering tools. Create superior-quality presentations by importing Adobe Illustrator files to add text and titles to your original source material. Design precise, high-quality presentations for reviews that sell your ideas to colleagues and customers. Use unrivaled color calibration and separation tools to move quickly from the drawing board to the printed document. No matter what your design challenge, Adobe Photoshop software for Silicon Graphics makes image editing and processing tasks easy and fast. Harness the power of the IRIX operating system to manipulate large files, multi-task between projects, and interface with other 2D and 3D applications.
