Photoshop, one of the most advanced graphics software in the world, now it is in tenth step of upgradation with newer version CS3. Photoshop is a most popular among the photographers, graphics designers, photo editing labs, color labs, Architect professionals, visual effect engineers and animation industries. There are some other softwares also available in photo editing category like Aperture from Apple, Corel paintshop from Corel corporation, Serif PhotoPlus, Ulead PhotoImpact, ACDSee Photo Editor, PhotoSuite, FotoFinish Suite, Photo Explosion, Picasa and PhotoImpression. There are many other softwares aldo available but they are less known or have a very few tools. If we take a look look on Photoshop CS3 and simple tool Picasa from Google, than we will find that there are huge differences between Photoshop and Picasa. Picasa is a simple photo editing application where we can quickly adjust lighting, brightness, contrast and we can use its red eye reduction and some editing tools like crop etc. but in terms of Photoshop the situation is completely deferent, it has all features of Picasa but there are lots of the very advanced features in it. Photoshop is completely meant for learners to advanced users, it is very user friendly and easy itself.

History of the Photoshop

Photoshop has a very long history with many past versions till latest CS3 version. First version of Photoshop was released in 1988 and after that the journey of Photoshop has never been stopped. Most popular version of Photoshop was 7.0 and released in 2002. After the entering in Digital photography world, Photoshop got huge response from all over the world. Photoshop 7.0 was released with RAW image processing tool and in the most Digital SLR cameras RAW capturing is popular and more real and informative. We can't be cheated with camera defect and can take an image in RAW format and processing can be done with Photoshop. Many cameras have a RAW processing software with their accessory but most of them are charging price for that. So if you have a Photoshop newer than 7.0, than you need not to buy any other RAW processing software. After the 7.0 version , another newer version was released in 2003, and the tradition of naming of Photoshop was changed. Newer 8.0 version was called as Adobe Photoshop CS, and for convenience and not to confusing its old users, adobe has given it similar name as Adobe Photoshop 8.0. In Photoshop CS the look was slightly changed but there was not big ugradation over 7.0. Next version was Photoshop CS2 and it was released in 2005, but there were some problems with this version and it didn't get such a popularity of earlier versions. Peoples still remains happy with Photoshop 7.00 and I was also one of them who faced some problems with CS2 version. I was unable to work continuously in CS2, and my computer often got hanged. One next generation of Photoshop there is a newer version available with Adobe Photoshop CS3 in May 2007. This version was released after the most awaited operating system Microsoft Windows Vista. CS3 version also called as Photoshop 10 and there are many changed and new features have been added over previous version. This new Photoshop w as released in three different categories as Photoshop CS3, Photoshop CS3 extended and Photoshop CS3 extended student edition. Extended version is costly than general CS3 edition and you have to pay 200-300 pound more for extended version. Extended version is recommended for more advanced users who required to import 3D content and video contents in Photoshop Extended version can open many 3D format and we can edit or render them with using Photoshop. It is generally required for 3D animators and Model makers for better rendering effects. General users need not to go for extended edition and general edition is more enough for them.

New features

There are many improvements in Photoshop CS3 over previous version. Most user friendly improvement in Photoshop CS3 is its Side dock. I had problems with its previous versions of Photoshop that the side docks were independent and we have to move them every time or they create problems many times in canvas or working space. Now the newer version has a good placement of Side dock and we can manage them easily. We can active dock window as per our requirement. We can collapse of expand dock panel by clicking upper bar of dock window. When we think that there is no need of dock window, than we can collapse that dock windows and can have a wider working space. Next improvement is its Vista like look, it is excellent in terms of visual effect and can take more interest in working with Photoshop. Other improvement I have seen in terms of its starting time and CS3 version take less time to start than CS3 and CS versions. It has slightly more time to start than 7.0 version. Other improvement is in toolbar palate, and now we can chose tools in 2 vertical rows or in single row, and I really enjoy this feature. Previously the toolbar was divided in double roes and that cover some extra space in working space.

Manu bar

Now I am going to explain its all basic and important features which are common with its previous versions also. First of all I will take a quick look on menu bar. There are ten different menus available in this bar, with File, Edit, Image, Layer, Select, Filter, analysis, View, Window and Help. Menu bar is something similar to Microsoft Office and the functions are little bit common and more other are different due to its function and scope. If we take a look in first menu, File than it has its oven functions like some basic functions, New, Open, Browse, Open as, Open recent etc. The other functions are in saving category, close, save, save as, save for web etc. another part of this menu is import and export functions and that is the excellent feature for importing and exporting Photoshop file in other formats. The other important functions in file menu are Automated where we can make a PDF presentation, can create droplet etc. PDF presentation making is slightly different than exporting format in PDF format. In export menu we can export only single image as a pdf format, but in pdf presentation we can make a pdf file of many opened files in Photoshop.

Next important menu bar is Edit menu and there are many useful functions available there, like common copy, paste, undo, redo and most important function is preference to manage our whole Photoshop working environment. There is nothing new over its previous version of Photoshop here also.
The most important function in menu bar it Image menu. It has whole image adjustment features in it like levels, contrast, color, curve, brightness and contrast adjustments. Many other color adjustments are also there. It also has image placement functions like rotate image, aspect ratio, canvas size, image size etc.
Layer menu is meant for play with layers. We can adjust layer, fill layers, manage layers, dllelete layers and many more.
Select menu is completely dedicated to play with selected image in various prospects. We can inverse or reverse of selected image, can select all layers, deselect layers etc. normally each function has it oven keyboard shortcut or we can adjust shortcut for them so that we need not to go in menu bar and select functions. That is time consuming process and due to key board shortcut we can easily access Photoshop.

Filter menu has all filters of Photoshop and we can give different looks to our image. Filters are the most important features in Photoshop and there are lots of filters also available as a extra packages or we can add more filters to our Photoshop. There is no limitation to creating filters it is similar to our imagination with infinite creation. All other menus are familiar with normal computer users and they can understand them.

Toolbar

The all available tools in adobe Photoshop are same as its previous versions, but there is slightly change in Photoshop CS3, that we can adjust toolbar in single or double vertical rows. The new feature has been added to provide more or extra working space. Toolbar has all working tools like move tool, selection, lasso, basic wand, crop, pan for basic working tool and other tools for effects and adjustments.

Dock Windows

Dock windows are the lifeline of Photoshop, it has many working and information windows like most important History window where we can invert our work to previous position as such a level. We have to adjust total history memory so that we can remember defined number of history actions. Other important Dock windows are layers, Histogram, action, color, swatches, path etc. there is very interesting improvement in Photoshop CS3 is its adjustment and placing factor. Previous version of Photoshop has individual placements of dock windows and they create problems many time with its working space by interfering in it. Now the excellent improvement is available with CS3 version and we can expand or collapse all dock windows and can get full working space.

Conclusion and my personal opinion

I am using Photoshop since last 3 years and I enjoyed a lot with it. First version of Photoshop I have used was &.0 and Now I have a CS3 version. I have experienced a lot with Photoshop and thought about many improvements and features which is necessary or useful for complete image processing requirements. From Photoshop CS3 I got lots of satisfaction with its superb improvements and new features. Working with Photoshop is very easy, speed is very fast with compare to CS2 version, look and feel is very good and has an eye catching feelings. Generally we don't know all the features about Photoshop, but if we know all the features of it than we can do everything with Photoshop. As my personal opinion we can use Photoshop as MS Office and can do all word processing work, can make presentations etc. From professional graphics designer and photographer to learning person this version of Photoshop is sufficient enough. It is very advanced image processing software available in the world. Over all I am enjoying it with lots of imaginations and creations and recommend it for every computer users.
