The CS4 edition has two really great upgrade features: It uses your graphics card processor directly, making your work blisteringly fast. (Unless you don't have a decent graphics card of course!) The program is a little slower to run than CS3 and of course most of the features in CS3 are in CS4. The other good feature is that it can run in a dedicated 64 bit mode - so really making the most of your high powered PC.
New stuff
Pixel editing. When you zooom right right in, you get a sort of grid feature where you can see each pixel with a grey border around it. It makes it really easy to get pixel perfect finishes on your work without worrying about whether you're going to hit this pixel or that.
Masks - the mask control has loads more options and its own dedicated panel to control it. Really handy if you use a lot of masks like I do.
Colour correction - this works much better than before and faster too. Some of the effects which would make the colour correction fail now work perfectly.
Workflow help - you can now have all your images in tabs rather than splattered across the screen.
Adjustments panel - this lets you tinker with an image without making any permanent changes for some basic image changing features like brightness / contrast / HSV values etc. Sounds uninteresting but it saves you time.
So whether you'd want to upgrade is more down to whether you really need those features. I got the upgrade along with a complete suite upgrade, and I do like the new version. But for me, I wouldn't have bothered with the upgrade if I hadn't had it automatically as it doesn't really offer me much that I couldn't do before with CS3.
Advantages: Superb finish, unbelivable outfut and detail that can be manipulated, changed, created. Disadvantages: cumbersome and overwhelming for 1st time users.
...pertains to after effects and adobe illustrator and photo shop. I use photo shop mostly to give offline marketing back up to the visual campaign. I use photo shop mostly for creating elements and structuring pictures to go with the visuals. One thing i dont like about it is that it insists that the help goes online. There is another way where you cn download the entire help pdf unto the computer but having done that there is no offline link to it ... ...like me. i am guessing it would be pretty annoying to get the small stuff you forget to use like the shortcut keys and other lil thing you come along as you do advanced tutorials from the resources available online. that why i have given it a poor. but thats only my personal opinion. The ease of use is exceptional. its logic and very easy to know what you are going to get for simple aks like editing and stuff its a not brainer. create different layers ...
