I'd recently bought a new digital camera and was taking lots of pictures so wanted an easy to use package that would catalog my files and also let me edit them, so I purchased Adobe Photshop Elements 4.0.
Instruction / Help
Elements did not come with any printed manuals only a cd, which contained installation instructions, e-books, websites and tools. The help system was very good, similar to Microsoft's MSDN, it's very thorough.
Installation
The installation was very easy, I just inserted the CD and followed the prompts. Installation took approx. 5 minutes.
Performance
The program itself takes a little while to start, but once it's started all operations seem reasonably quick on my Dell Laptop. In edit mode applying filters takes hardly any time.
Interface
The interface is very easy to use, there are 3 main windows, the catalog, quick edit mode and standard edit mode. When you first start Elements up it asks you where to look for photo files, once this has been set it searches that location and displays all the pictures found in the catalog window. The catalog window gives you lots of different ways for organizing the files on your computer, most of these leave the files where they are but allows you to tag them. You can tag pictures with people's name s who are in them, the place, or event. These tags then allow you to filter your photos by person or by event etc. There si a very useful feature for tagging people and that's the Face Finder, it will find all the faces in your pictures so you can quick and easily tag them, although it only works if you have correctly orientated your photos so that the face are the right way. From the catalog window you can also create slideshows, calendars, DVDs etc.
The Quick Edit mode is just what it sounds like a way to apply quick fixes to your photos like red-eye fixes or lighting fixes. In Quick Edit mode you need very little know how to improve the look of our photos very quickly.
In Standard Edit mode, you get the same functionaluty as Quick Edit, but with a lot more manual options. To use the Standard Edit mode you do need to know what you're doing a bit more as this is like a slighlty cutdown version of Photoshop CS. There is a lot of things you can do in Standard Edit, there are lots of filters to play with, you can change levels, colour, lighting fix blemishes on skin, remove wrinkles plus many, many more. These additional features are where the e-books on the cd come in handy giving you lots of information on how to use the software to its best.
Value for Money
For me this is excellent value for money, I got this on ebay for £11 including postage, for that it can't be beaten, even at full price this is an excellent package.
Conclusion
For cataloging and editing your digital photos this is a great program. There are so many features to explore that you will be amazed at how good your pictures can look after using this program. I highly recommend it.
Advantages: Great selection tools, pan & zoom in slide shows, price, printed manual Disadvantages: file browser gone
Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 aims to be everything the photographer wants for tweaking and fixing their images. Whilst the professionals prefer its more expensive big brother Photoshop CS, Photoshop Elements isn't to be sniffed at and offers 80% of the power for 10% of the price whilst making many tasks much easier.
The biggest surprise coming from version 3 is that the file browser has gone. Adobe, what are you thinking? Well, it's clear what they're ... ...As a sort of apology, Adobe have added the ability to browse what it calls unmanaged folders to replace the file browsers functionality but it's not the same. That said, it's also about the only down side in Photoshop Elements 4. The album interface also allows you to quickly find faces in images allowing for quicker tagging, remove red-eye on import and other fancy tricks. Call me sad, but having been raised on the BBC's Blue Peter TV program, I'm ...

My Photoshop is Welsh? Review ofAdobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 Complete packageby
innovator
Advantages: Fairly easy to use, and has all the features your likely to need for photo editing. Included tutorials. Technical Support. Disadvantages: It doesn't always work first time! It isn't wildly fast unless you have a very powerful PC. Closing and saving files is a bit torturous.
...high as I loaded the Adobe Photoshop Elements software. After all, all the reviews had been good, and previous Photoshop software worked like a dream. However, my dreams came crashing down when I tried to run the edit option. I waited... and waited... but my system was stuck fast. The screen was frozen, and according to Task Manager, the software was not responding but was using up all my CPU! I tried everything to fix the problem, including reloading ... ...windows XP, resetting my screen refresh rate, and reducing my hardware graphics accelerator. Then after a month of bemoaning this waste of money, I called Adobe.......
A very helpful tech support person, talked me through some checks, and then asked something very Bizarre.... "Was I running in English?" When I checked, I discovered that the default language on my PC had been set to Welsh. Apparently Photoshop doesn't like this (I don't think it's ...
