I see this fishing magazine as a good one, for 3 reasons: 1) It keeps you informed with tips and reviews (of both, tackle and venues). These are very useful. The tackle reviews, often written by pro's like Dave Wesson (Australian Ex World Champion, also editor of the magazine), are very truthful and honest. Afterall, with poles costing as much as much as a car, now being easily available, they don't want anglers wasting their lifes savings on a wobbly piece of carbon rubbish.
2) The main articles in the magazine, of which there are normally around 3, are very informative. Each one involves an expert, fishing a certain method, who do their best to explain everything that they're doing over the course of the session. For example, the Nov/Dec 2000 issue, contains; 'Deep canals', 'Bream on a carp water' using chopped worm, 'hemp on the canal', 'groundbaiting for roach', and finally 'fishing shallow' for big fish. All of these are so well laid out, that if the reader wanted to, they could copy the expert exactly.
3) It is a usefull place to look when you want to buy any new equipment. This is linked in with the reviews, but the magazine does contain many adverts from some of the countries fishing shops. Most of which quote very cheap prices which can save you hundreds or even thousands. They have everything from top of the range poles, to floats and hooks, all at low low prices. Even though there is a lot of advertising space inside the magazine, with an average of around 100 pages per edition, it doesn't spoil it in any way.
Because it is a pole magazine, this is obviously mostly what you'll find inside. If you want something more allround. I'd recommend either 'Improve Your Coarse Fishing', which is an excellent beginners mag, or 'Match Angling Plus', which is much like this one (it's published by David Hall - the same people) but aimed at more of an allround match approach.
Advantages: See my summary, brilliant for beginners Disadvantages: NOt quite enough detail for the more experienced anglers
.... ‘Improve’ will give you that, and I really think that there is something for everyone within these 120 pages (ish).
There are quite a few adverts for tackle shops in the magazine, but I think that’s actually one of the good things about it. I rarely find the need to use local tackle shops for any bigger items. Between these pages you will find some of the best deals I’ve ever seen in my life.
Quite of ten, they do an ‘ULTIMATE GUIDE TO…..’ section. This month they tell you all about pole floats, which I can really see being extremely useful for the beginner (for those more advanced check out ‘AdvancedPoleFishingTechniques’). Each month they obviously change the subject, again, as with the rest of the magazine, they never really pick something that is helpful to ALL, but...
