(+) cool and quite robust trackpad, good display,64-bit windows 7 (-) few connectors, dell drivers only, not realy for gameing (most models), finger print prone!
Advantages: Power. Style. Lightweight. CDRW/DVD Combo drive. Fast. Dedicated AGP graphics card with 16MB DDR memory. Not too expensive compared to most other notebooks. Plenty of expansion/add-on ports Disadvantages: The lack of a floppy drive may be a disadvantage to some, but not to me

Anyway, here’s what made me decide to buy this notebook:
Price: £1499, but was discounted to £1419. (Not too expensive!)

RAM: 512MB SDRAM (Can’t see me ever needing to upgrade this, but it can handle up to 1GB RAM!)

I’ve finally bought a nice shiny new notebook pc after about 3 years of deep thought! It was only by pure chance that I spotted my new toy on a recent visit to everyone’s favourite pc store – PC World (don’t even think about it!), where I’d gone to price a few components for a friend. I was looking for hard drive prices & also for a new LCD monitor for my pc. Whilst wandering around the isles I came to the notebook/portable pc isle & stopped to see what was on offer. After a good look at the various models, I took a shine to the Advent 7002, which was a new range from Advent.
Anyway, here’s what made me decide to buy this notebook:
Price: £1499, but was discounted to £1419. (Not too expensive!)
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 1.8GHz (Willamette) (A big CPU to have in a notebook!)
RAM: 512MB SDRAM (Can’t see me ever needing to upgrade this, but it can handle up to 1GB RAM!)
HDD: 30 GB UDMA ATA 100 (Just a nice size)
Graphics: ATI mobility M6 AGP 4X with 16MB DDR-SDRAM (A great graphics card for a notebook, so I’ll undoubtedly have a go at a few games! The M6 is actually a Mobility Radeon.)
Display: 14.1” TFT XGA LCD (Max resolution of 1024x768. This is crystal clear & great colours!)
Cache: 512KB on die cache
CD-ROM: CDRW/DVD-ROM Combination drive (CDRW = 8x4x32, DVD = 8x. Great to have & hasn’t increased the price like some other notebooks!)
Modem: 56K V.90 Data/Fax. (PC Tel brand, but good constant connection speeds of 48000bps)
Audio: Built-in Advance Logic AC97. (Not great sounds when using the built-in speakers, but improves greatly with a set of headphones/speakers)
Ports: 2 x USB ports (Lets you connect external drives, printers, scanners & all the rest) Ports: 1 x Parallel Port (If you want to connect your device via this) Ports: 1 x P Card port (Type II, PCMCIA 2.1 compliant. Lets you expand your notebook without many problems) Ports: 1 x Infra Red port (Lets you connect a range of wireless devices easily) Ports: 1 x VGA Out port (Lets you connect an external monitor easily) Ports: 1 x TV-Out/S-Video Port (Fancy seeing your stuff on the tele?!) Ports: 1 x Audio Out Port (Connect your mic here & start talking!) Ports: 1 x IEEEE 1394 Firewire Port (Lets you connect even more stuff to expand your notebook’s use! Connect up that digital camcorder!)
LAN: 1 x 10/100 Base T (Ethernet card for helping you network your notebook to another pc!)
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (I really like MS’s latest & greatest operating system, but I’m glad that I didn’t have to pay for it!)
The price, again - £1499! That price is a bargain, but the fact that the sales guy knocked £80 off makes it even better value for money! In all that’s a lot of power for a pretty reasonable price as I saw plenty of lower spec notebooks for a lot more money. Because of the specs of my new notebook I’ll be trying some of my favourite games out on it & seeing just how well that they play. I will be rather interested to see what 3D Marks 2001 makes of my notebook & its graphics potential. Come to think of it, I’ll be interesting to see how well my notebook performs against a whole range of rigs using various benchmarking programs.
Anyway, my reasons for buying a notebook are rather simple & straightforward in reality. I wanted a notebook so that I could do a lot of photo editing whilst away on holidays. Once my digi-cam’s smart media card is full I could simply download the photos onto the notebook & then wipe the media card & it would be ready for the next load of holiday snaps. Another reason being that I fix/upgrade & build a good amount of computers & it’s handier if you can just connect the pc to the notebook & run diagnostics from there. Finally, I wanted to be able to be more mobile & not just pinned down to the one place when using computers. There’s more reasons than these, but these are the most important reasons to me & I honestly expected to pay a lot more for this type of notebook than I ended up paying!
I only bought this notebook on Thursday 7th February 2002 & I have been doing my best to get to know the various workings of the thing & also to familiarise myself with the various functions & limitations. I, like most people, am used to a full sized keyboard & it’s taking a while to get to grips with the more compact one of the notebook, but I’ll get there! One thing that I was pleased at when I looked at the side of the packaging box, was the full specs of the notebook, but also the actual manufacturing date of it too & it turned out that my notebook was built on 24th January 2002, which was only a few weeks ago! It’s nice to know the date that your pc was built as you know that it’s not old & well & truly dated.
As soon as I got home after paying for my new toy I unpacked all the various bits & bobs (much to my bemused wife’s amusement! I was only going for some prices & to buy a new LCD monitor!) & then began having a quick read through the user manual. The user manual spans some 100 or so pages & covers virtually everything that you need to know about upgrading, using & maintaining your Advent 7002 notebook. It’s well laid out, easy to read & find things & importantly it’s very easy to understand! Basically, this is a great reference tool & well worth giving a bit of time too. You’ll also find a brief guide to Windows XP Home Edition which is designed to get you on the road to using it without many problems.
Moving on, you’ll find that you will be able to get your notebook up & running in no time at all! Just remove the protective dust/scratch covers, plug in the AC power adapter, switch it on, open the lid of your notebook & switch it on at the power button. Once the notebook boots you will be welcomed to your new pc & its operating system & from there you will be guided through some options that will help you to set the thing up properly. Regardless of your level of experience, setting up your new 7002 is a doddle!
The layout of the 7002 is good & a brave bit of thought went into designing it. You’ll find that you have the audio out, mic & IEEEE 1394 ports on the very front of the case, as well as the speakers & volume control. Look at the left hand side & you’ll find the LAN & PC Card ports, along with an air vent. Take a look at the right side & you’ll find the CDRW/DVD combo drive, along with the Infra Red port. Finally go to the back & you’ll find the 2 USB ports, Parallel port, phone line cable port, VGA-Out port, TV-Out port, AC adapter port & the Kensington lock (for adding security features to prevent your beloved notebook from being stolen!). The ports are well laid out & help prevent various cables from becoming tangles or mixed up.
When it comes to graphics there’s a good combination of graphics card & display. You get an ATI mobility M6 AGP 4x graphics card with 16mb DDR-SDRAM, which should play most modern games, let alone display colours & pictures. Add to that a nice 14.1” TFT LCD screen, which is crystal clear & displays your colours perfectly. The display on this notebook has been taken to the next level in my books, as you don’t normally expect dedicated graphics cards of this standard in most notebooks, without paying a fortune for them! I’ll be benchmarking my system before too long & will post the various results once I get them & that way you’ll see just how big a performer the Advent 7002 really is!
The 7002 is silver for the main part of the casing, but has a dark blue lid, which helps give a bit more style to the thing. It weighs in at 2.95Kg (6.5lbs) which isn’t the heaviest notebook around & size wise it’s not a big beast either as its dimensions are – w = 1.33mm x d = 263 x h = 36/41mm. In all reality, this is a really nice, well laid out notebook that’s packed with features.
When you come to the combo drive (CDRW/DVD) you couldn’t ask for more! The DVD side of things is a very respectable 8-speed player & it plays flawlessly to say the least. I tested the DVD player out with several good kids films (Shrek, which leaves my sides sore from laughing so much & Evolution, which is also very funny for the most part) at full screen resolution & everything was perfect to say the least. Checking the CDRW drive out (8x4x32) I recorded some files to a blank disk & the operation was quick & painless. There’s no dedicated program for the CDRW like Nero or Direct CD, but that’s because Windows XP has support for burning stuff to disk. Everything went smoothly & quickly, which was nice to see! Oh yeah, the DVD player uses Win DVD 2000 as its software player, which is easy enough to use.
Sound is catered for by the Advance Logic AC97 soundcard & it performs well enough, but nothing like my main pc’s SB Live! 5.1 soundcard. The stereo speakers aren’t up to much & you are far better off using a set of headphones with inline audio controls as this let you pump up the volume that bit more & makes things that much better.
I was happy with the installed software that was on the 7002 as there was only the operating system & drivers! There were no stupid programs or demos installed which you normally find on a new pc. Instead, I was given a software bundle separately which comprised of Microsoft Premium Pack (Works Suite 2002 & Personal Portfolio 2002) & nothing else, but I was happy enough to be honest as I have most of the latest software in my collection already. Either way, I took the software all the same. As I said previously, your operating system is Windows XP Home Edition, which I have to say is utterly the best os that they’ve produced to date as it’s stable & easy to get used to.
That’s it folks, except to say that inside your packaging you’ll find:
1x Notebook driver CD 1x Win DVD 2000 CD 1x AC power adapter 1x System restore CD 1x Modem cable 1x User’s manual 1x Win XP quick start guide 1x Advent 7002 notebook (worry if it’s not there!!!)
Overall, the Advent 7002 is an excellent system that’s stylish, lightweight & a big bundle of power & all at a very reasonable price! Oh yeah, the sales guy threw in a 3 year extended warranty & notebook carrying case for free! The only drawback is the lack of a floppy drive, but it’s not that important to me as I have a CDRW on my notebook & one on my main pc so I can transfer files using cds rather than floppies or by networking.
Check out the PC World site (http://www.pcworld.co.uk & look under the 'What's New' heading at the top of the page) for details & other stuff that may be of interest to you.
Marks out of 10 has to be 10 as this is an excellent system for the price & worth every single penny!
17/02/2002: I've tested the 7002 with the newly released Medal of Honour Allied Assault & it plays flawlessly at 1024x768x32 & with all graphics & game settings set to high.
I've also run a graphics benchmarking test (3D Marks 2001) & it gained a result of 1962, which is pretty good in my books!
24/02/2002: After a bit of delving about the Net I have discovered the true manufacturer of this notebook! The true creator is a firm called Mitac & you can find their full facts sheet @:
http://www.mitacuk.com/products/detail.asp?id=85
The real name of the notebook is a MiNote 8170 & it has been adapted by PC World under the Advent banner as well as Hi-Grade & others. It's nice to know where to get all the proper drivers & other system updatres when they are released, rather than the way PCWorld do their updates for systems, especially Advents! Just thought that anyone who's interested in purchasing this notebook might be interested in the background behind this superb bit of machinery.
28/02/2002: I've had my 7002 for 3 weeks now & haven't had a single problem with it as yet (long may that continue!). I ran the notebook on it's battery power yesterday & the battery lasted for almost 2 hours before it needed to be charged up again, so you know that you can get away with using the battery safely for about 1.5 hours before you may run into any problems.
The modem had been performing quite well & I've been getting consistant connection speeds of 48,000bps to both Freeserve Anytime & Lineone Surftime.
Games wise, I've played Return to Castle Wolfenstien, Medal of Honour Allied Assault & Rainbow 6 Ghost Recon & all have played flawlessly to say the least. It's a true desktop replacement on every way shape & form. To be honest, I've hardly used my desktop pc since getting my notebook.
Still a 10/10 notebook then.
17/04/2002: Since purchasing my 7002, I have now discovered that Advent(Hi-Grade) have rebranded this model and are now calling it model 7006 (for whatever reason). Besides that I was recently notified by the manufacturer about a possible defect in some models. The defect warning is that in some models (7002/7006) the 2nd USB port doesn't work. If you have a defective rig, it you notify the manufacturer and they will arrange for it to be collected, repaired and returned, which is fair enough. I tried my ports when I bought my rig and can happily report that no such problems were encountered (thankfully!).
Since purchase I have run into several program crashes, but not system crashes. The only crashes that I've had have been with Internet Explorer, so it's a Microsoft problem, but what's new there! I've been happily playing big games, namely Operation Flashpoint ( & add-ons), Return to Castle Wolfenstien & Medal of Honour and all have played perfectly. The only thing that I do when playoing games is to attach my USB Intellimouse Explorer mouse as using the touchpad just doesn't work the same when playing shooters.
Nothing else to say for now, but I'll update at regular intervals, should anything interesting crop up about this rig.
15/05/2002. If you look at the Currys/Dixons/PC World sites, you may get this excellent notebook/laptop for £100 less as they have been running an offer on it for the last few days. I'm not sure how llong the offer will last, but it makes it even better value for money than it already was when I bought mine.
23/06/2002. There's a nice big price drop to tempt you & also a good bit of news that I discovered about the recovery cd. If you look carefully at the recovery cd (once you buy the laptop of course!) you will find that it is in actual fact the full version of Windows XP Home Edition, which hasn't been activated! Isn't that a nice way to get a new operating system for your desktop for free & also have the latest OS on your laptop!
Advantages: fast Disadvantages: Unreliable, bad support, cheap components
I had a sony laptop for four years. The thing was a tank. It survived large amounts of abuse thrown its way without even a mearmer, never missed a beat. It was however getting a bit dated so i decided to upgrade. I saw this laptop in PC world. You can read all the specifications in the "opinion" above. For the money it sounded amazing so I took the plunge and handed over my £1499. I got home opened up the box and it seemed the laptop was alrady on ... ...I put it back in the box and made the 1/2 hour trip back to PC world with the battery dying half way there. Once there they promptly scolded me for letting the battery drain and not shutting down the computer first. After much arguing and shouting it transpired that they had given me the display model without telling me and that is why it was passworded.
over the next six months almost every component on the horrid little box failed. The USB ports ...

The advent 7002 has now become the 7006 and has come down in price from a respectable £1499 to a very a affordable £1299 (I believe another £100 has or will be taken off)
For your money you get a 1.8 Pentium 4, a 30G hard drive, a 14.1 screen, and unusually for a notebook in this price range a DVD/CDRW. The features you get with this laptop are only normally seen on notebooks above the £1500 mark.

2) Advent is not reliable, nor are its componants.
I had an advent that ceased working only after 3 months of use, and this wasn't regular use, 1 hour a day at most. It was taken back and the "Expert" showed how to get it working but it stopped working again. My problem with Advent is that its clumsy, go for a Toshiba or Sony.

OK, so you get the general idea from the title of this review that I am the proud owner of 2 laptops. I bought my Advent7002 (now Advent 7006) in February of this year (2002) which is one laptop. I am now the owner of a Packard Bell Igo 5581 after winning it recently in a competition. I may well be lucky owning two excellent laptops, but I can only use one at a time though!
Right, enough waffle and let?s get down and dirty with the nitty gritty of my new PB Igo 5581, the specs, the good and the bad points so you can see what one of these machines is made of!
-----
Price: ? ?: The PB Igo 5581 has a retail price of £1499 in Curry?s, Dixon?s, PCWorld and other stockists, so it?s no cheap toy by any means. I did notice the other night though that PC World was offering £100 off the price for a limited time. They are also ...
