The advent 7002 has now become the 7006 and has come down in price from a respectable £1499 to a very a affordable £1299 (I believe another £100 has or will be taken off)
For your money you get a 1.8 Pentium 4, a 30G hard drive, a 14.1 screen, and unusually for a notebook in this price range a DVD/CDRW. The features you get with this laptop are only normally seen on notebooks above the £1500 mark. . When I purchased this laptop (12 months interest free) I was informed that it came with a floppy drive, on arrival home I found it had not, I contacted Dixon’s where I had purchased it and they gave me a network cable to link the laptop to my desktop so I could use that floppy. (They also threw in a carry case)
Networking the 2 computers was made very easy by xp, which will set up and configure both computers for you . You also get a disk with the notebooks drivers, power DVD, and a rescue disc of xp home. (I have been informed this is a full copy but it does not look like one to me, no codes, no full format option) I would have preferred a full copy but it really makes no difference apart from you can only format the disc in NTSF (as far as I can tell)
The battery lasts about one and a half hours under normal use, a bit less if watching a DVD. The laptop comes with a TV out so with a cheep s-video to scart cable you can replace your DVD player. Use power DVD for this as it supports the s/pdif to give you that cinema sound. You need a compatible cable that plugs into the headphone socket. (Go into configuration and audio properties to activate the s/pdif) The speakers are a bit naff (I think all laptop speakers are) but I just plug it in to my stereo if i am watching a film or listing to music through the laptop.
The laptop does appear to get quite warm but I have not had any problems with it overheating. (Unlike my over clocked p2 400 desktop) As for the weight, with a case it’s not heavy and nobody would have trouble carrying it.
Possible the only problem I have had with the 7006 is sometimes after it starts the first couple of times you try to use explorer it fails and says it has performed an illegal operation, Norton also fails to load up at the start when this happens, this could be due to my ineptitude more than anything else or the bonzibuddy the better half downloaded. (A small talking monkey)
The mouse pad is a little strange to start with and the keyboard is smaller than normal but you soon get used to it, if you have used a laptop before you wont have any problems. The mouse pad has a click feature that means you can tap the pad having the same effort as a left click. You will love or hate this feature but you can turn it off.
It also has an infra-red port so you can link it to your mobile (very slow conection speed) without having to buy an expensive cable.
I am very pleased with the 7006 and would recommend to anybody after a laptop for whatever reason even to replace your desktop. (I hardly ever use mine anymore) It’s not as fast as the equivalent P.C. but its definitely not slow.

Advantages: Power. Style. Lightweight. CDRW/DVD Combo drive. Fast. Dedicated AGP graphics card with 16MB DDR memory. Not too expensive compared to most other notebooks. Plenty of expansion/add-on ports Disadvantages: The lack of a floppy drive may be a disadvantage to some, but not to me
