popular real-time strategy games of all time. Set in ancient instead of feudal times, Age of Empires lets players guide one of a dozen civilizations with various strengths and weaknesses through a variety of campaigns and single scenarios. The civilizations are diverse, running the gamut from the Assyrians to the Persians to the Yamato, and each can be played from its Stone Age roots to the epoch of its greatest achievements. This is one of the few games in this genre that lets players choose either an aggressive path or a more peaceful defensive course of action, as it is possible to win many games by defending your border and building an expensive Wonder of the World. Overall, the game's graphics are very good, but special mention must be made of the animations. At last, horses move like horses, elephants move like elephants, and even the sight of a villager chopping wood looks realistic. Battles can get a little out of hand since the game lacks military formation controls, but they are a sight to behold nonetheless. Should you tire of the single-player challenges, Age of Empires is still very popular online. It isn't hard to join a multiplayer game at nearly any time of day. Be sure to grab the latest patch, which lets you build many more units and is necessary for playing online. Even if you already have Age of Empires 2, don't miss out on the game that started it all. --T. Byrl BakerPros:Good graphics--especially the unit animationsMany ways to winStill popular onlineCons:Needs a patch to achieve true greatnessWould be more fun if civilizations had bigger differences
of Empires II: The Age of Kings. Microsoft went all out to create this real-time strategy game, and it fairly hums with gorgeous graphics, sophisticated AI and challenging scenarios for the novice and experienced player alike. The point of the game is to shepherd your fledgling civilisation to world domination, using war, trade and exploration. You start with the bare minimum to get going, and you've got to balance your people's needs with your desire to be a little Napoleon. The Age of Kings gives you a ton of new units and technologies to enrich your strategic options. Each scenario is placed accurately within history, but you're also free to create your own.The multiplayer format is robust, allowing up to nine players to share a world. When battles commence, you can take control of every aspect of your workers and soldiers, sending them running for shelter in the town centre, ordering them to defend a watchtower, or setting their combat stance to aggressive for free-for-all sword smashing fun. When you're not fighting, find your idle peasants with a mouse click and send them back to work chopping trees, rounding up sheep, fishing or mining gold and stone. As you acquire more resources, you can improve your soldier's gear and skills, start to trade more efficiently, and make life better for everyone in your empire. You can choose from 13 groups to manage, from the Japanese to the Teutons and Franks. Each group has unique units and special characteristics, making this a game that changes every time you play it.If all this sounds complicated, it is. New players may be intimidated by the range of choices, but the teaching scenarios are very helpful in conquering the controls. Age of Empires II is a sophisticated, gorgeous successor to the wildly popular original. It's a real feather in Microsoft's cap--a world-building game that will hold you captive. --Therese Littleton

Advantages: Good game, can be frustrating at times Disadvantages: Map navigation not good
...guiding spirit of a stone age tribe, you aim to build the greatest civilisation on earth. You decide where to put your houses, build garrisons, ports, temples and your army. Your people must also collect gold, stone and wood and find food in order to survive. Basically you have over 10,000 years of real time evolution to build your tribe into the greatest empire.
This PC game works on windows 98, me and xp. Age of Empires, The Rise of Rome also ... ...of the infamous Roman Empire.
There are some frustrating features to the game. The horn/bugle call is a dead give away that you are about to be attacked and the map navigation is not the best. On the plus side the graphics are good and I love it when a wonder is destroyed. If you get frustrated, try a few cheats by searching on google, you'll have a laugh just as I did.
I give this 94%. Enjoy........................ ...
