The Agfa Snapscan 1212p is my first scanner and what an excellent choice I made! The p stands for parallel port, such as your printer port. For those of us who are not lucky enough to have USB connections as our computers are not exactly upto date enough for this sort of technology finding a cheap parallel port scanner has become increasingly difficult.
As far as I can tell Argos now do not do a parallel port scanner and Office World has expensive models. I was not going to pay £50 for a cable to change the cheap USB scanner to a parallel port connection, as that seemed a waste of money.
I waited and tried to order one from a small company, but at the time my computer was not good enough for the software and did not meet the requirements. So I gave up.
The other day when looking on a competitions site I came across www.Meroncourt.com. Here I notice that they were offering refurbished scanners, parallel port for £29.99! They are still cheap new, but this was an offer I had to look at. The one I chose was the Agfa Snapscan, refurbished Grade B scanner. Grade B means that it may be slightly damaged, such as a scratch or small mark. I cannot even see why it is a grade B as there is nothing wrong with it that I can see.
I rang them up and spoke to a friendly member of staff who told me about the scanner and I got the address to send them a cheque. The delivery fee for my scanner was £10. I posted the cheque and within 2 days the scanner was on my doorstep. The next day delivery was excellent. I found it easy to setup and install. It came with lots of software, such as Corel Print House 4, Agfa Scanwise and Omnipage text editing software.
I installed them quickly and easily and within minutes I was scanning a photograph. There are plenty of options for the type of media you are scanning so that you get the best results such as newspaper, magazine, photo, glossy or matt and other options. You can easily change the size of the scanned image and choose how to manage it, such as saving it to a file, printing it immediately, (like a photocopier) or dealing with it in some other way, such as the text editing sofware options.
I was very impressed by the results, as my friends scanners, that came with their PC's and cost a lot of money, which are good makes such as HP and Epson, could not produce images as good as mine in my opinion and were not as easy to use. I was able to edit the photo and the print it very easily.
Newspapers tend to have lines and marks left in the image, but not with the Agfa Snapscan. The images are crystal clear and sharp. I am very pleased with the software that came with the scanner.
Although it looks quite bulky it is a stylish looking scanner and it does take up a little bit of room. I am very impressed by the quality of the Agfa Snapscan and the service I received from Meroncourts. I have been busy today scanning alsorts of photos, magazines and pictures I can find, with great results. It can take sometime to scan certain pictures, but I can wait. The pictures are also kept quite well compressed to save on disk space unlike some other scanning software. I would highly recommend the Agfa scanner, especially if you need a parallel port scanner.
I was also pleased that you can connect your printer to the back of the scanner so that you don't have to keep unplugging each one when you want to use it. You don't even need to have the scanner switched on to use the printer! I only have one Parallel port on my PC, so this was a bit of a worry for me until the scanner arrived and I found this useful connection.
Oh Yeah, it has a resoluton of 600 dpi and vertical is 1200 dpi.
Overall a fantastic piece of kit!

My Dad was quite pleased when I showed him this opinion as he works for Agfa, he doesn't have anything to do with the Scanner bit though. Another superb opinion. :) Cheers mate, James.
