Manufacturer's product description

SnapScan 1236s is ideal for both home and office use. Designed for both PC and Macintosh platforms, SnapScan 1236s is a high-performance, SCSI-port color scanner, with a remarkably low price tag. It captures razor-sharp images up to 8.5" x 11.7" (A4) and can register more than 60 billion colors! This amazing color sensitivity extracts every last detail from your originals. And the optional transparency scanning module and automatic document feeder give you full flexibility and high productivity. SnapScan 1236s captures the detail and color depth you'd expect from a scanner of twice the price. Its true optical resolution of 1200 x 600 ppi gives impressively sharp images from photos, artwork, magazines or books up to 11.7" x 8.5". The optional transparency module scans slides and film up to 8" x 10". With its unusually high 36-bit sensitivity, SnapScan 1236s can register more than 60 billion colors. That's 4000 times the number used in any desktop publishing application! FotoLook's intelligent processing of this 'super-sampled' data results in rich images that retain important but subtle color changes, like skin tones and shadow details. For the dare-devils among you, AGFA has created a dusky-gray version called the SnapScan 1236s Art line. An additional range of image manipulation software from MetaTools is included in the package: Kai's Power Tools SE, Bryce 2.0 SE, Convolver Full and Soap SE. Both the standard and Art Line models are equipped for direct connection to PC or Macintosh.

Excellent quality scanner and software
Review of Agfa SnapScan 1212u by  mandarin

Advantages: Quality of scanned image, Ease of set up, free software updates
Disadvantages: None discovered

...More expensive than your run of the mill scanners but worth every penny. It comes with superb scanning software - Scanwise - and later versions can be freely downloaded from the Agfa site. I often scan glossy laminated products and it copes with the reflective surfaces without problem. Another joy for me is that when I scan old documents I need to keep creases etc intact for authenticity. It handles this fine and I have even been asked how I put the creases in! For me though, the main benefit is the ability to just select a destination program and it's launched with the scanned document ready inserted! I will be buying a flatbed transparency scanner shortly - I'm hoping there is an Agfa to choose from - no need to look elsewhere.... Read review

AGFA SnapScan 1212p
Review of Agfa SnapScan 1212p by  Andrew.Self

Advantages: Cheap, scans come out pretty well too
Disadvantages: Not compatible with Windows 2000

...I've had the AGFA SnapScan 1212p for a few years now. I would agree that it's not exactly a slimline scanner, but then again, compare it with other scanners that are a few years old and it's nothing out of the ordinary. It's very easy to install in Windows 95 and Windows 98. Upgrading from Windows 98 to ME didn't make a difference, it quite happily continued working without needing to be installed again. I tend to use the TWAIN import feature in my paint package though, instead of using the software that came with the scanner. It's slow by todays standards but then I did pick it up for £20 on the bargain rail in PC World about three years ago! The speed is not a problem unless you're scanning lots of items, I am a fairly light scanner user so it doesn't matter to me. The resolution is fine as well, colour reproduction is pretty close... Easy to use flatbed scanner
Review of Agfa SnapScan 1212p by  AlexDP

Advantages: Simple to use.
Disadvantages: Have to turn it on befor computer.

...I have had the AGFA Snapscan 1212p flatbed scanner for two years now. It was new when I got it. The p (in 1212p) stands for parralle, as it connect to that port on your computer, not use UBS port. This makes it slightly slower when sending signals from your Pc to scanner. The scanner comes with two good programs for scanning, Agfa Foto Look and Agfa Foto Snap. They are both very easy to use, Foto Snap being aimed at the beginer. The scanner can scan just over an A4 piece of paper. I does have one drawback though - you have to turn it on before you turn you computer on or else your computer won't regonise its there. This won't happen if you have a USB version. I would recommend the scanner to a beginer. A expert would find that it doesn't cater for all their needs.... Read review
